McGuffey’s Dalton to be honored
McGuffey High School football coach Ed Dalton was named the Pittsburgh Steelers High School Coach of the Week for the Highlanders’ 48-14 win over Beth-Center in Week 4.
The award recognizes the commitment, hard work and positive effort that coaches and their staff make to their players throughout the Pittsburgh region both on and off the field.
Dalton will be honored during today’s Steelers game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Girls soccer
Paige Marshalek led Bentworth with a hat trick as the Bearcats downed Monessen, 7-0, in a Section 2-A match that ended five minutes into the second half because of bad weather.
Marshalek moved into second in all-time scoring list in program history with 71 career goals.
Jocelyn Timlin had a pair of goals for Bentworth (9-0, 11-1). Rori Schreiber and Lindsay Davis also scored.
- After falling behind, Mt. Lebanon scored three unanswered goals to upend first-place Peters Township, 3-1, in a Section 2-AAAA match.
Peters Township (8-3, 10-3) opened the scoring when Hannah Stuck found Natalie Daube for a goal with 3:07 remaining in the first half.
Less than one minute later, Mt. Lebanon (6-3-2, 7-4-3) answered to tie the game. The Blue Devils then scored a pair of goals to pull away in the second half.
- A second-half goal lifted South Park to a 1-0 victory over Waynesburg in a Section 3-AA match.
The loss drops Waynesburg (9-2, 11-3) to second place in the section behind the Eagles. It also ended a nine-game winning streak for the Raiders.
South Park improves to 9-1 in the section and 12-2 overall.
Boys soccer
In a non-section match, Austin Arnold netted three goals to lead Chartiers-Houston over Washington, 6-2.
Matt Bucha, Dom Hancq and Nathan Boardley each had a goal for C-H (4-9-2), which ended a three-game losing streak. Hancq also had three assists.
- Trailing by one goal at the half, Thomas Jefferson scored a pair of second-half goals to edge Belle Vernon, 3-2, in a non-section game.
Aaron Brown and Daniel Sassak each found the back of the net for Belle Vernon (8-4-1).
- Nick Goodwin made nine saves to earn a shutout victory and help lead Charleroi over Elizabeth Forward, 8-0, in a non-section match.
Nick Laskey, Cullin Woytovich and Jace Kepich all scored two goals for the Cougars, who improve to 13-0.
Girls field hockey
Peters Township defeated Pine-Richland, 1-0.
Women’s soccer
Nationally ranked West Chester jumped out to an early lead and went on to defeat visiting California, 3-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game.
Cal (0-10-1, 1-10-1) goalkeeper Gianna Sinatra made a career-high eight saves.
Madison Baxter, Nikki Zaso and Julia Kirkpatrick all scored for the Golden Rams.
Men’s soccer
West Chester scored a pair of goals in both halves to shut out California, 4-0, in a PSAC match.
The Golden Rams scored the goals by dominating play and having a 19-6 shot advantage throughout the game.
Nicholas Meola, Brett Miller, Nick Jachwak and Daniel Grindrod scored for West Chester (4-1-1, 7-2-2).
Cal falls to 0-6 in the conference and 1-6-3 overall.
Women’s field hockey
Alana Boyd scored the only goal eight minutes into the first half as Washington & Jefferson College defeated Hartwick, 1-0, in an Empire 8 Conference game.
Goalkeeper Rena Israel made a career-high eight saves for the Presidents, who improve to 4-0 in conference play and 10-0 overall.
