Drew Engel, a wide receiver who was making his first start at running back, rushed for 292 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries as Canon-McMillan moved closer to a playoff berth in Class 6A with a 34-12 victory over Norwin in the Quad County Conference.
Alex Hendal rushed for 66 yards and added two scores for Canon-McMillan (2-4, 3-4).
The Big Macs’ defense made the day rough for Norwin’s passing game as it produced seven sacks. Davey Cooper led the way with three sacks and Connor McMahon had two sacks.
Engel, who was starting at tailback in place of injured Josh O’Hare and had only two carries all season entering the night, scored on runs of 14 yards in the first quarter, 15 yards in the second and nine yards for the final score of the game.
Norwin used a safety and field goal to close to within 6-5, but C-M took control after Engel’s 15-yard score and a seven-yard blast by Hendal, both in the second quarter. Norwin pulled to within 20-12 in the final minute of the third quarter, but Hendal’s second TD, a 13-yard jaunt up the middle, ended the Knights’ comeback bid.
Belle Vernon 28, West Mifflin 12
Mason Pascoe rushed for 211 yards and two touchdowns as Belle Vernon clinched at least second place in the Big Eight Conference and a first-round home playoff game by defeating West Mifflin 28-12.
Pascoe scored on runs of four and six yards, the latter giving Belle Vernon (5-1, 6-1) a 21-6 lead in the third quarter.
West Mifflin (4-1, 4-4) closed to within 21-12 in the fourth quarter4 when parish Parker scored on a three-yard run. Belle Vernon, however, sealed the win on Larry Callaway’s five-yard TD run.
The Leopards opened the scoring with a one-yard plunge by quarterback Jared Hartman, who left the game with an injury.
California 55, Bentworth 21
Austin Grillo threw five touchdown passes to lead California to a 55-21 victory over Bentworth in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.
All Grillo’s completions went for touchdowns: 51 yards to Cochise Ryan, 43 yards to Malik Ramsey, 29 to Jaedan Zuzek, and 27 and 40 yards to Lucas Qualk. Jelani Stafford rushed eight times for 108 yards and a TD for Cal (4-1, 4-4).
Owen Petrisek ran for one touchdown, caught a touchdown pass and threw a touchdown pass for Bentworth (3-3, 4-4).
South Fayette 54, Highlands 21
Jamie Diven tossed four first half touchdown passes as South Fayette disposed of Highlands, 54-21, in a Class 4A Northwest 8 Conference game.
Diven completed all nine pass attempts for 221 yards. Mike Trimbur caught 4 passes for 117 yards and a TD. Charley Rossi caught two passes for 30 yards and a score for the Lions (5-0, 7-1).
Chartiers-Houston 20, Avella 7
Anthony Lento ran for two touchdowns and Chartiers-Houston blanked Avella over th efinal three quarters to hold on for a 20-7 victory in a Tri-County South Conference game.
Chartiers-Houston (3-3, 3-5) moved to the .500 mark in the conference by overcoming a 7-0 deficit at the end of the first quarter. Jimmy Sadler trimmed the Avella advantage to 7-6 when he scored on a two-yard run and Lento gave C-H the lead with a three-yard TD run before halftime.
Lento gave the Bucs a two-score cushion with a seven-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
The C-H defense held Avella (0-5, 1-7) to 122 total yards. The Eagles took the lead on a two-yard run by Frank Craig. Owen English led the Eagles offense with 89 rushing yards on 15 carries.
Penn Trafford 42, Trinity 6
A 20-point first quarter paved the way for Penn Trafford’s 42-6 victory over Trinity in a nonconference game at Hiller Field.
Noah Allen scored twice for the Warriors (5-2) and Dave Dunlap scored on a run and two-point conversion.
Kaden Kolson scored on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter for Trinity (1-6).
Monessen 42, Mapletown 0
Dawayne Howell completed nine of 14 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns as Monessen cruised to a 42-0 victory over Mapletown in the Tri-County South Conference.
Howell threw TD passes of 45 yards to Devin Whitlock, 20 yards to Darnell Howell and 33 yards to Antwon Tucker.
Vaughn Taylor rushed for 100 yards and two scores on only six carries for Monessen (5-1, 6-1), which led 30-0 after the first quarter. Taylor had TD runs of four and 68 yards.
SS Academy 46, Fort Cherry 0
Skye Moore accounted for five touchdowns to pace Shady Side Academy to a 46-0 victory over Fort Cherry in a nonconference game.
Moore ran for four scores and tossed another for SSA. Moore finished with 225 yards on 15 carries.
Zach Vincente rushed for 43 yards for Fort Cherry (2-6).
Beaver Falls 49, Waynesburg 10
Daylin Brickner accounted for six touchdowns as Beaver Falls routed Waynesburg, 49-10, in a Class 3A Tri-County West Conference game.
Brickner ran for three scores and passed for three more for the Tigers (5-1, 7-1). Brickner rushed for 137 yards on just 4 carries and completed 8 of 11 passes for 197 yards.
Nate Stevenson snapped the shutout in the fourth quarter touchdown run from the one. He ran for 119 yards on 28 carries. Colin Rose caught the two-point conversion for the Raiders (0-6, 1-7).
Greensburg Salem 35, Ringgold 0
Kenny Shea ran for a pair of two-yard touchdown runs and Greensburg Salem rode a 21-point second quarter to a 35-0 victory over Ringgold in the Big Eight Conference.
Greensburg Salem (3-2, 3-5) led by only 7-0 after one quarter but broke the game open in the second quarter. Jalen Page scored on a 15-yard run to give the Lions a 14-0 lead with seven minutes left in the first half. Before the half would end, Shea would get his second 2-yard scoring run and Dajuahn Hertzog would run six yards to make it 28-0.
Ringgold (0-5, 0-8) was shut out for the fifth time.
OLSH 53, Jefferson-Morgan 0
Austin Wigley ran for three touchdowns as Our Lady of Sacred Heart defeated Jefferson-Morgan 53-0 in a nonconference game.
OLSH (7-1), the first-place team in the Big Seven Conference, led 26-0 after one quarter and 46-0 at halftime. Wigley scored on runs of 20, 23 and two yards, each in the first half.
Jefferson-Morgan slipped to 2-6.
