WVU releases Big 12 basketball schedule

West Virginia will open the Big 12 basketball season at home against Texas Tech Jan. 2 and face both perennial league champion Kansas and Oklahoma at home on separate weekends.

The Big 12 released the league portion of the schedule Wednesday.

After playing Texas Tech, West Virginia will have back-to-back road games at Texas on Jan. 5 and at Kansas State Jan. 9.

WVU typically plays Kansas on a weeknight but this season will face the Jayhawks Jan. 19.

Other league home games include Oklahoma State on Jan. 12, Baylor on Jan. 21, Oklahoma on Feb. 2, Texas on Feb. 9, Kansas State on Feb. 18, TCU on Feb. 26 and Iowa State on March 6.

West Virginia opens the season at home Nov. 9 against Mid-American Conference champion Buffalo.

Girls soccer

Alyssa Wright and Keely Acor each scored two goals as Chartiers-Houston won its Section 2-A opener Wednesday, 7-1, over Monessen.

Carolyn Mankey, Alma Bimpong and Veronica Hess each contributed a goal for Chartiers-Houston (1-0, 2-1). Monessen’s goal was scored by Sydney Paterino.

  • Youth was served for McGuffey as freshmen Lola Yendel and Cameron Moore each scored a goal in the Highlanders’ 2-0 home victory over Beth-Center in the Section 2-A opener.

McGuffey (1-0, 1-0) also had a big game from another underclassman as goalkeeper Jordan Sekora made eight saves to protect the lead.

Beth-Center is 0-1 in section and 0-3 overall.

  • Undefeated Bentworth rolled to a 13-0 victory over Geibel Catholic in the Section 2-A opener.

Paige Marshalek, Jocelyn Timlin and Rori Schreiber led the Bentworth onslaught as each player scored four goals. The other Bearcats goal was scored by Lindsay Davis.

Marshalek also had four assists and became Bentworth’s all-time assists leader with 53. Marshalek has 55 career goals.

Goalkeeper Cassie Kossel had her third shutout of the season. Bentworth (1-0, 3-0) has outscored its opponents 19-0.

  • After a scoreless first half, undefeated Peters Township used goals by Regan LaVigna and Hannah Stuck to build a two-goal advantage and then held off a late charge by Bethel Park to edge the Black Hawks, 2-1, in Section 2-AAAA.

LaVigna had the opening goal of the match, an unassisted tally off a free kick. Stuck’s goal was assisted by Natalie Daube. Indians goalkeeper Emma Sawich kept Bethel Park (0-1, 2-1) scoreless until 10 minutes were left in the match.

PT is 1-0 in section and 3-0 overall.

  • Upper St. Clair scored the final five goals of the match and defeated Canon-McMillan 5-1 in Section 2-AAAA.

Samantha Snyder gave the Big Macs a 1-0 lead with a goal three into the contest, but USC used two goals late in the first half to take a 3-1 advantage at halftime.

Women’s soccer

Washington & Jefferson lost a 1-0 match against Frostburg State in the Presidents’ home opener Wednesday.

The Bobcats took an early lead, scoring in the fifth minute when a Frostburg State forward corralled her own rebound in the box and scored to the lower-left corner.

PAC Player of Week

A stingy Waynesburg University defensive effort led the women’s soccer team to a pair of shutouts over the weekend. Sophomore Jessica Silbaugh was one of the top performers on the unit and was recognized as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Defensive Player, Goalkeeper of the Week.

Silbaugh led a Waynesburg defensive effort that allowed only 12 total shots, seven of which were on goal, over a pair of shutouts at the Spartan Classic, which was hosted by D’Youville. Waynesburg defeated the host team 1-0 and Hilbert 3-0.

  • Waynesburg freshman Aubrey Wingeart had a strong effort in her first collegiate race Friday at the Westminster Fisher Invitationaland was named the PAC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.

Wingeart made a great first impression by placing second overall and first among the Yellow Jackets with a time of 23:55.98 on the six-kilometer loop. Waynesburg won the team title.
