High school football
Charleroi running backs Brayden Mihalcin and Hunter Perry combined for 347 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Cougars to a 48-7 victory over Riverview in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon.
Leading by only a touchdown at halftime, 14-7, Charleroi (1-0, 2-0) exploded for 27 unanswered points in the third quarter to pull away from the Raiders.
Mihalcin opened the scoring for both teams with a 30-yard touchdown in the first quarter. He had 206 yards on 14 carries and four scores.
Hunter Perry had 9 carries for 141 yards and two touchdowns.
The lone touchdown for Riverview (0-1, 0-2) came on a 64-yard run by Devin Binz.
Girls soccer
Alyssa Wright scored three minutes into double overtime as Chartiers-Houston defeated Charleroi, 1-0, in a Section 2-A game.
Ashley Horvath assisted on the winner. Kasey Scears made eight saves to earn the shutout victory for C-H (2-0, 3-2).
Girls field hockey
Abby Todd scored a pair of goals as Shady Side Academy defeated Peters Township, 4-2.
Maura Farinelli and Nica Schratz each scored for Peters Township.
Men’s soccer
Capital scored two early goals 18 seconds apart to cruise to an 8-0 nonconference victory over Waynesburg University.
Waynesburg falls to 1-3 overall.
Women’s soccer
Playing with just 10 players for over 87 minutes of against Wooster, the Washington & Jefferson women’s soccer team suffered a 4-1 defeat against the Fighting Scots in a non-conference game.
Wooster scored a pair of goals on 10 shots in the first half, then added another two scores in the opening five minutes of the second half to lead 4-0.
The only goal by W&J was when Michelle Cicalese scored on a deflected ball in the 71st minute.
- California University surrendered a pair of second-half goals lost to PSAC opponent Bloomsburg, 2-0.
The Vulcans were held without a shot in the second half as they fell to 0-3 in conference play and 1-3 overall.
At The Meadows
Looped from the gate, Phoenix Warrior N nevertheless overpowered a distinguished field en route to his second straight victory – and 11th this year – in Saturday’s $18,000 Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows.
A 27.1 opening panel in the slop tested him, but Phoenix Warrior N opened a daylight lead for Jim Pantaleano and prevailed in 1:51.1, 1-1/4 lengths better than Windsong Leo, who rallied from an early break to earn place. The pocket-sitting Vague Traces was third.
Aaron Merriman had eight drives on Saturday’s program and made the most of them, collecting five wins, a second and a pair of fourths. Two of those victories were for trainer Bill Rhoades and owner Leah Rhoades. Dave Palone, Pantaleano and trainer Marcus Marashian each enjoyed a triple on the 13-race card.
