Girls Soccer

Sydney Urbine scored four goals as Beth-Center outlasted Monessen, 5-3, in a Section 2-A match.

Sierra Phillips also scored for Beth-Center (1-2, 1-4).

Sydney Caterino scored a pair of goals for Monessen (0-3, 0-4).

  • Trinity dropped a Section 3-AAA match-up to Oakland Catholic 2-0.

The loss gave the Hillers (3-1, 4-1) their first defeat of the year, while Oakland Catholic improves to 3-0 in section and 3-1 overall.

  • Jacelyn Timlin had four goals to become the all-time leading scorer as Bentworth defeated Monessen, 10-1, in a Section 2-A match Wednesday night.

Timlin has 70 goals for her career.

Paige Marshalek, Rori Schreiber and Jasmine Manning each had a pair of goals for the Bearcats.

Boys soccer

Charles Mrlack III had a pair of goals and Nathan Lynch made eight saves as Monessen defeated Chartiers-Houston, 3-2, in a Section 4-A match.

Cam Frolo also scored for Monessen (1-1-1, 2-1-2).

Jarred Waggett and Matt Bucha each scored for Chartiers-Houston (0-3-0, 0-4-1).

  • Beth-Center tallied the opening five goals and secured a 5-3 victory over Washington in Section 3-AA action.

Todd Fisher added two goals for the Bulldogs (3-1, 4-2).

The loss drops Washington to 0-3 in section and 0-4 overall.

  • Daniel Layton scored an overtime goal, as Waynesburg defeated Southmoreland, 4-3, in Section 3-AA play.

The Raiders (3-1, 5-1) carried a 3-0 lead in the second half, before the Scotties (1-2, 1-3) sent the game into the extra session with three straight goals.

Gavin Benson, Jack Church and Scott Benco all had goals for Waynesburg, while Dalton Watson picked up the win in net with six saves.

  • Greensburg Salem scored the only goal in overtime as it defeated Trinity, 1-0, in a Section 3-AAA match.
  • Nick Laskey, Cullin Woytovich and Jace Kepich each scored two goals to lead Charleroi over Section 3-AA foe Brownsville, 9-0.

Charleroi (4-0) has scored at least nine goals in each of its four games this season and has yet to allow a goal.

  • Seton-La Salle defeated Bentworth, 11-1, in a Section 4-A match.

Leyton Hustava had a goal and Jaxon Selvoski made 15 saves for Bentworth (1-3).

Waynesburg

University hires Bean

Waynesburg University announced the hiring of assistant men’s basketball coach Greg Bean on Thursday to head coach Mark Christner’s staff.

Bean most recently served as associate head coach during the 2017-18 season at NCAA Division III Medaille College. Last winter, he helped lead the Mavericks to a 19-11 overall record and a 13-5 mark in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

Prior to being named associate head coach, Bean held the position of assistant coach at Medaille from 2015 to 201. Before beginning his time in the college game, Bean built his reputation in the high school ranks. From 2010 to 2015, he was the varsity coach at Redbank Valley High School in New Bethlehem.

Robert Morris routed

Ben DiNucci accounted for a career-high five touchdowns and James Madison eased by Robert Morris 73-7 on Thursday night in a game played early because of Hurricane Florence.

James Madison (2-1), ranked No. 2 in the FCS coaches’ poll, tied a program record with 52 points in the first half.

Marcus Marshall went in motion and took a short pass 39 yards to open the scoring. DiNucci made it 14-0 on a short sneak after Cardon Johnson highlighted the drive with a 21-yard run. DiNucci found Kyndel Dean wide open in the back of the end zone for a 15-yard score and a 21-0 first-quarter lead.

DiNucci’s 17-yard scramble made it 28-0 and he threw an 8-yarder to Riley Stapleton on their next possession. Jimmy Moreland became James Madison’s career leader with 15 interceptions on a second-quarter pick-6 and Percy Agyei-Obese scored with 24 seconds left before halftime for a 52-0 lead.

DiNucci was 14-of-17 passing for 184 yards and three touchdowns, and he carried it seven times for 39 yards and two scores.
