High school football roundup: Match that: Wash High, McGuffey roll to 55-0 victories
Washington’s Zack Swartz completed nine of 10 passes for 190 yard and two touchdowns, setting the school career passing TD record, during a 55-0 rout of Brownsville in a Class AA Interstate Conference game Friday night at Wash High Stadium.
Wash High is 1-1 in the conference, 3-1 overall. Brownsville is 0-2 and 0-3.
Swartz now has 40 career TD passes, one more than Justin Gregula, who graduated in 2001.
Dan Walker caught both touchdown passes, one from 36 and the other from 34. Swartz also rushed six times for 128 yards and scored twice. Walker had five catches for 112 yards.
McGuffey 55, Carmichaels 0
Christian Clutter scored three first-half touchdowns to help McGuffey roll over Carmichaels, 55-0, in a Class AA Interstate Conference game.
Clutter scored on runs of 26 and 56 yards and returned an interception 22 yards for a third score for the Highlanders (2-0, 4-0). Marshall Whipkey hit Brendan Crowe with a 40-yard score and ran one in from 67 yards. Bryton Johnson and Rocco Falosk also had TD runs.
McKinley Whipkey scored on a 2-yard run in the second half for McGuffey. Clutter rushed for 82 yards, Whipkey passed for 63 and Crowe had 40 receiving yards.
Burgettstown 41, Summit Academy 0
Cyle Conley scored on two short touchdown runs to highlight Burgettstown’s 41-0 victory over Summit Academy in a nonconference game.
Shane Kemper rushed for 101 yards on 14 carries and opened the scoring with a four-yard run for the Blue Devils (3-0). Cole Shergi scored on a 14-yard run and Dylan Poirier caught a 15-yard pass from Jake Lounder for another score. D.J. Slovick recovered a fumble in the end zone for the final score of the game.
Summit Academy (0-3) has not scored this season.
Bentworth 24, Chartiers-Houston 21
Trent Cavanaugh rushed for 120 yards and scored three touchdowns, Shawn Dziak threw two touchdown passes, including the game-winner to Owen Petrisek with 3:07 remaining, and Bentworth outlasted visiting Chartiers-Houston 24-21 in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.
In what was the best local game of the night, the Bearcats and Bucs traded the lead until the final score of the contest. Cavanaugh had touchdown runs of 30 and 3 yards and caught a 24-yard scoring pass from Dziak. A 3-yard TD run by Cavanugh, who carried 16 times, gave Bentworth (1-1, 2-2) an 18-14 lead with 7:30 remaining.
Chartiers-Houston (1-2, 1-3) then drive down the field and regained the lead at 21-18 on a five-yard touchdown run by Seth Dunn with 4:10 remaining. Dunn also had a 2-yard scoring run in the first quarter and tossed a 10-yard TD pass to Tyler Blumen with one second left in the first half that gave the Bucs a 14-12 advantage.
After Dunn’s second touchdown run, Petrisek returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards into C-H territory, setting up his game-winning 16-yard touchdown from Dziak.
The teams then exchanged fumbles before Cavanaugh had a strip sack of Dunn and Bentworth recovered the fumble with about 1:30 remaining. The Bearcats were able to run out the clock.
Dunn had a big night, completing 13 of 26 passes for 225 yards. Blumen caught six passes for 110 yards.
Jeannette 55, Avella 7
Marcus Barnes returned a punt 53 yards for a touchdown and added 40-yard TD run during Jeannette’s 42-point first half as the Jayhawks rolled to a 55-7 victory over Avella in a nonconference game.
Jeannette (4-0) led 42-0 at halftime. Avella’s lone score came in the foruth quarter4 when Frank Craig ran five yards for a touchdown.
The Eagles are 1-3 overall.
Laurel 37, California 14
Laurel forged a 23-point halftime lead and cruised to a 37-14 victory over host California in a nonconference game.
Laurel (2-2) led 16-0 after one quarter and 23-0 at halftime.
California (1-3) did all of its scoring in the third quarter as Malik Ramsey and Jaeden Zuzak caught TD passes from Austin Grillo. Ramsey’s catch went for 55 yards and the scorign toss to Zuzak covered 22 yards. Grillo was 10 of 15 for 190 yards.
Jelani Stafford led the Cal ground game with 29 yards on eight carries.
In other games
In Class 6A, North Allegheny pulled away in the second half to defeat Canon-McMillan 45-21 to spoil the Big Macs’ home opener. In Class 4A, Belle Vernon bounced back from a loss last week to roll over host Laurel Highlands, 49-7. In the Class 2A Three Rivers Conference, Brentwood defeated visiting Fort Cherry 28-7. Beth-Center remained undefeated in the Class 2A Interstate Conference by winning at Southmoreland, 52-26. In Class A, Monessen was a 55-0 winner over visiting Jefferson-Morgan. No details from these games were made available to the Observer-Reporter by press time.
