West Greene rolls, 47-0

West Greene took firm control early and rolled to a 47-0 win over Mapletown in a Tri-County South Conference football game Saturday night.

The game was moved from West Greene to Waynesburg’s field because of flooding.

Ben Jackson rushed for 163 yards and three touchdowns for the Pioneers (3-0, 3-1). Kolin Walker had a 5-yard touchdown run, Gavin Scott threw a 50-yard scoring pass to Nathan Brudnock and caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Austin Crouse.

Brock Bedilion recorded a 27-yard fumble return for a score in the second quarter. Both teams were held scoreless in the second half.

Girls soccer

Waynesburg picked up a nonsection win Saturday with a 6-2 triumph over previously undefeated Bentworth at home.

Bailey Fudala scored three goals, while Rhea Kijwoski had two goals and two assists for the Raiders (3-2). Elise Benke had the other goal. McKenzie Booth made four saves.

Paige Marshalek and Jocelyn Timlin scored for the Bearcats (4-1).

  • Trinity flexed its offensive muscle in a non-section matchup with winless Uniontown and took a 7-1 victory.

Alyssa Clutter collected four goals for the Hillers (5-1) and Sam Schury added two goals.

  • Canon-McMillan posted its third straight shutout with a 6-0 rout of North Hills in nonsection action.

Abby Hitkins made four stops for the Big Macs (3-1-1). Emily Clopp led the offense with three goals and two assists, and Annabell Thomas had a goal and an assist.

  • Belle Vernon steamrolled to a 11-0 Section 2-AAA win over Albert Gallatin.

Isabella Laurita and Jillian Butchki tallied three goals apiece for the Leopards (2-0, 3-1),and Morgan Einodshofer had two goals.

Jillian McCullough, Klaire Temoshenka and Gianna Laurita also scored.

  • South Fayette took care of business in a nonsection game with Seton LaSalle, prevailing 5-0 at home.

Sara Meindl scored two goals for the Lions (4-1), while Rachel Weis, Cece Gagliardino and Helina Van Bibber each had first-half goals.

Goalkeeper Faith Falick recorded the shutout against the Rebels (2-3-1).

  • Chartiers-Houston suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to Serra Catholic 2-1 at home.

Ashley Horvath tallied the lone goal for the Buccaneers (4-3), while Jaimie Dermotta totaled both goals for the Eagles (4-2).

Kasey Scears recorded 14 saves in net for C-H.

Boys soccer

Chartiers-Houston picked up its first win of the season after a 3-0 victory over Bentworth in Section 4-A play.

Jake Cimino scored two goals for the Bucs (1-3-0, 1-4-1),and Matt Bucha had the other marker.

Jaxon Selvoski made 16 saves for Bentworth (1-4, 1-6).

  • Elijah Cincinnati and Italo DeLuca each scored two goals in Trinity’s 5-0 shutout of Albert Gallatin in Section 3-AAA.

Mason Pendergast also scored a goal for the Hillers, who improved to 1-3 in section and 3-4 overall, the same records as the Colonials.

  • Section 3-AA leader Charleroi rolled to an 8-1 victory over Yough.

Leo Iacovangelo and Cullin Wytovich led the way for the undefeated Cougars (5-0, 5-0), each scoring two goals and assisting on another. Nick Laskey had a goal and two assists, and Jace Kepich, Phil Banks and Randy Carson scored the other goals.

Women’s soccer

Washington & Jefferson head coach Scott Gerseny got his first career win as the Presidents defeated Penn State Behrend 1-0 in overtime Saturday.

Waynesburg scored two first-half goals in a 2-2 double-overtime draw with Mt. Aloysius.

Waynesburg (4-1-1) ended Mt. Aloysius’s (6-0-1) six-game winning streak. Goalkeeper Courtney Syfert preserved the tie by making six saves.

Pens’ Sullivan taking leave after father’s death

Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan is taking a leave of absence to be with his family following the death of his father, George.

The Penguins said George Sullivan, 81, passed away on Saturday in Scituate, Mass.

Assistant coach Jacques Martin will run the day-to-day operations of the coaching staff while Sullivan is away.

“We’ll handle the load until he gets back,” assistant coach Mark Recchi said. “It’s a very tough time for him. We’ll make sure things run the way he would run.”
