Penguins fall to Sabres in preseason opener

Jake McCabe and Jack Michael scored a pair of goals in the second period to help the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the preseason opener for both teams.

The Penguins were limited by Buffalo goaltender Carton Hutton, who made 14 saves in two periods.

Will O’Neill and Juuso Riikola scored late third-period goals for Pittsburgh, and goalie Casey DeSmith made 26 saves for the Penguins.

The Pens will host the defending Stanley Cup champions Washington Capitals in the regular-season opener Thursday, Oct. 4 at PPG Paints Arena.
