Jonathan Wolfe scored five rushing touchdowns and Jefferson-Morgan, sparked by two safeties, overcame a late first-half deficit and scored 36 unanswered points to beat Avella, 46-13, Friday night in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game at Parker Field.
Avella (0-2, 1-4) used a touchdown pass from Owen English to Brandon Samol and English’s 1-yard TD plunge to take a 13-10 lead early in the second quarter. The score held until 3:30 was left in the first half when English was called for intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a safety. Jefferson-Morgan (2-2, 2-3) also scored on a safety in the first quarter.
The Rockets took the ensuing free kick and scored when Wolfe ran in from seven yards with only 12 seconds left in the first half. A two-point conversion run gave J-M a 20-13 lead.
The second half was all Rockets as Wolfe scored on runs of two, five and 17 yards. Wolfe, who rushed for 104 yards on 18 carries, had a one-yard TD run in the opening quarter.
Jefferson-Morgan also scored when Jacob Broadwater returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown.
English had 122 rushing yards on 15 attempts for Avella.
Bentworth 49, Mapletown 0
Trent Cavanaugh rushed for 229 yards and three touchdowns to pace Bentworth to a 49-0 victory over Mapletown in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.
The games was called with 3:21 remaining in the third quarter because of inclement record.
Owen Petrisek rushed for 49 yards on three carries and scored twice for the Bearcats (2-1, 3-2). Shawn Dziak and Jamar Harper also scored.
Mapletown fell to 0-5, 0-3 in the conference.
Belle Vernon 49, Indiana 14
Belle Vernon turned a tie game at halftime into a rout by scoring 28 third-quarter points en route to a 49-14 victory over Indiana in a Class 4A Big Eight Conference contest.
Larry Calloway had a pair of touchdowns, on runs of 20 and 18 yards, during the pivotal third quarter and tacked on a two-point conversion plunge as Belle Vernon turned a 14-14 tie into a 41-14 advantage. The Leopards (2-1, 3-1) scored 27 points in eight minutes of the third quarter.
Mason Pascoe started the big second half for Belle Vernon with a two-yard TD run and Jared Hartman followed with a one-yard scoring plunge. Pascoe also opened the scoring with a two-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
Indiana’s Ryan Dickson threw a 56-yard TD pass to Luke Thomas that made it 7-7, but Belle Vernon regained the lead at 14-7 when Nolan Labuda caught a 20-yard TD from Hartman in the second quarter.
Indiana (1-3, 1-4) sent the game to halftime at 14-14 when Thomas scored on a one-yard keeper.
Pascore capped the scoring with his third TD, a 41-yard run, in the fourth quarter. He finished with 197 yards on 23 carries.
Hartman was seven of nine passing for 95 yards and one score in the rain-plagued game.
Indiana fumbled seven times, losing three.
South Park 41, Waynesburg 7
Rudy Mihoces rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns, and Jacob Robertshaw returned an interception 85 yards for a touchdown on the final play from scrimmage in the first half as South Park defeated Waynesburg 41-7 in a Class 3A Tri-County West Conference game.
Mihoces, who carried 19 times, broke open a close game in the second quarter when he ran for scores of 53 and 23 yards during a three-minute stretch that saw South Park (1-2, 1-3) forge a 28-7 lead.
Robertshaw’s interception and return for a score ended any thought of a comeback by Waynesburg (0-3, 1-4), which trailed by only 14-7 midway through the second quarter.
Michoces opened the scoring with a two-yard TD run and Brandon Goldbach gave South Park a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter with a 60-yard TD reception on a pass by Stephen Kmonk.
Waynesburg made it 14-7 when Caleb Shriver threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Avery McConville, who had 84 yards on three receptions.
Goldback scored the only points of the second half on a 16-yard pass from Kmonk in the third quarter.
Nate Stephenson was the leading rusher for Waynesburg with 58 yards on 18 carries.
Thomas Jefferson 48, Trinity 0
Max Shaw ran for 134 yard and scored twice to Pace Thomas Jefferson to a 48-0 win over Trinity in a Class 4A Big Eight Conference game.
The game was called at halftime because of inclement weather.
Shane Stump completed 8 of 10 passes for 155 and four touchdowns. Dan Digner caught three of the TD passes and returned a punt 46 yards for a score for TJ (4-0, 4-0).
Trinity fell to 1-3 overall and in conference.
Sto-Rox 50, Chartiers-Houston 0
Eric Hogan ran for two touchdowns and caught a scoring pass, and Jaidon Berry hauled in two touchdown passes as Sto-Rox blanked Chartiers-Houston 50-0 in a nonconference game.
Sto-Rox (3-2) did all of its scoring in the first half. The Vikings led 28-0 in the first quarter as Hogan scored on runs of 65 and 21 yards and Berry caught a 9-yard TD. Sto-Rox had an 89-yard punt return for a score in the second quarter, which was followed by Berry’s 69-yard TD reception and a 17-yarder by Hogan.
Hogan finished with 110 rushing yards on six carries.
Chartiers-Houston (1-4) was held to 49 total yards and four first downs. The Bucs had five turnovers, including four interceptions.
South Allegheny 27, Fort Cherry 12
Antonio Epps rushed for 157 yards on 15 carries to pace South Allegheny to a 27-12 victory over Fort Cherry in a Class AA Three Rivers Conference game.
Epps scored on runs of 17 and 2 yards for SA (3-0, 4-1).
Zach Vincenti had 70 yards on 9 carries for Fort Cherry (1-3, 2-3). Vincenti had 15 tackles and Josh Holder 14. Maddox Truchell ran for 101 yards on 13 carries.
South Fayette-Hopewell suspended
The game between South Fayette and Hopewell was suspended with just under 5 minutes left in the first quarter when the power was lost at the field.
The game will continue from where it left off at 10 a.m. today but the site was moved to South Fayette.
The Lions hold a 14-0 lead, thanks to a Jamie Diven TD pass to Mike Trimbur from 6 yards and a 3-yard scoring run by Andrew Franklin.
In other games
Gateway was a 62-0 victor over winless Ringgold in a nonconference game at Joe Montana Stadium. Charleroi remained undefeated in the Class 2A Interstate Conference by rolling to a 69-7 victory at Carmichaels. No game details were made available to the Observer-Reporter by press time.
