Boys soccer

Senior captain Austin McColpin scored a career-high four goals to lead Canon-McMillan to a 6-0 victory over Brashear in Section 2-AAAA.

Mike Hillebrand and Tommy Samosky each scored for the Big Macs, who improve to 6-2 in section play and 9-2 overall.

Brashear falls to 1-10 overall.

  • Five different players scored in Beth-Center’s 5-2 in a Section 3-AAA match.

Michael Berdar, Todd Fisher, Logan Burrell, Bryce Lincoski and Dave Morris each had a goal for B-C (4-3, 6-4).

Yough fell to 1-7 in the section and overall.

W&J’s Milsom,

Wolf honored

A pair of Washington & Jefferson College football players were named to the D3football.com Team of the Week.

Linebacker Cody Milsom and wide receiver Andrew Wolf received the honor after a 62-10 win Saturday over Presidents’ Athletic Conference foe Grove City.

Milsom had a game- and career-high 12 tackles, including 11 solo stops and three that resulted in negative yardage for the Wolverines.

Wolf, who was named to the team for the second time this season, had six receptions for 196 yards and four touchdowns.

Higgins earns

PAC award

Cassidy Higgins, a freshman golfer at W&J, was named the Presidents’ Athletics Conference Rookie of the Week.

Higgins led the Presidents win the team title at Saturday’s Westminster Invitational at New Castle Country Club with a 14-over 86, which was good for third place.

Pens sign Haggerty

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Ryan Haggerty to a two-year contract.

The two-way deal contains an average annual value of $675,000 at the NHL level. Haggerty must clear waivers by noon on Wednesday.

Haggerty, 25, enjoyed a strong preseason with Pittsburgh this year, scoring in each of his two appearances and adding an assist. The Penguins assigned him to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins following his two-point game (1G-1A) Sept. 23 versus Detroit.

Prior to signing this contract, Haggerty had been playing on an American Hockey League contract with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Last year, the 6-0, 201-pound Haggerty posted the highest AHL totals of his career in his second season with WBS, scoring 16 times and adding 21 assists for 37 points in 47 games. In two seasons with WBS, Haggerty has produced 27 goals, 33 assists, 60 points and a plus-28 in 105 regular-season contests.

College soccer

The Waynesburg University men’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision when it hosted 24th-ranked Mount Union. The Yellow Jackets battled to a 0-0 halftime tie, but couldn’t crack the Purple Raider defense.

Mount Union, which improved to 7-0 on the season, has not allowed a goal over its season-long winning streak. The Raiders scored the match’s only goal late in the 55th minute.

Pirates won’t

play Miami game

The makeup game the Miami Marlins were supposed to play at the Pittsburgh Pirates on the day after the regular season ends has been canceled.

The cancellation was announced Tuesday, after both teams have been eliminated from playoff contention.

The original game was postponed Sept. 9 because of rain, then rescheduled for next Monday

This will be the second time in three seasons Miami will not complete a full, 162-game schedule. The Marlins played 161 games in 2016.
