High school football roundup: Burgettstown stays undefeated; Trinity falls in overtime

Jake Lounder threw a touchdown pass to Austin Ryan in the first quarter and ran for two short scores in the fourth quarter as Burgettstown remained undefeated with a 24-0 victory over Serra Catholic in the Three Rivers Conference.

The Blue Devils, who have the stingiest defense in Class 2A, improved to 4-0 in the conference and 5-0 overall. Serra slipped to 1-2, 3-3.

The Blue Devils scored the only points they would need in the first quarter when Lounder hooked up with Ryan for a 49-yard TD pass. Seth Phillis gave Burgettstown a 10-0 lead when he ended the first half with an 18-yard field goal.

The score remained 10-0 until Lounder scored on a 1-yard plunge on the first play of the fourth quarter. His three-yard TD run capped the scoring. Lounder completed 9 of 14 passes for 161 yards and carried the ball 27 times for 85 yards.

The Burgettstown defense held Serra to minus-33 rushing yards. The Eagles had 117 passing yards for 84 yards total offense and eight first downs.

Indiana 27, Trinity 21

Luke Thomas scored from 7 yards out in overtime to give Indiana a 27-21 victory over Trinity in a Class 4A Big Eight Conference game.

Trinity (1-4, 1-4) has a chance to win the game on the last play in regulation but a 28-yard field goal by Ryan Hornickle was blocked.

Michah Finley, who had 122 yards rushing on 23 carries, scored on a 64-yard run and Cole Bair went over from11 yards out as Trinity too a 14-0 lead in at halftime.

Thomas, who passed for 122 yards and ran for 60, scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter to cut the Hillers’ lead to 14-6.

Trinity made it 21-6 when Kaden Kolsen hit Marquese Lacks with a TD pass. Thomas then threw a pair of TD passes and Thomas ran for the game-tying 2-point conversion with 2:41 to play for Indiana (2-3, 2-4).

West Greene 52, Avella 0

Tailback Ben Jackson rushed for five touchdowns and West Greene remained undefeated in the Tri-County South Conference with a 52-0 victory over Avella.

Jackson led the Pioneers’ ground game, which churned out 395 yards. West Greene (5-0, 5-1) finished with 490 yards total offense. Jackson scored on runs of 30, 57, 40, 22 and 30 yards.

Kolin Walker had a 20-yard TD run in the first quarter and Nathan Brudnock caught a 26-yard scoring pass from quarterback Gavin Scott. Austin Geho closed the scoring with a 20-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Avella is 0-3 in the conference, 1-5 overall. The Eagles were held to 75 yards total offense.

California 54, Jefferson-Morgan 0

Jaedan Zuzak ran for two touchdowns and returned a punt for a score, and Jelani Stafford rambled for a pair of second-quarter touchdowns as California rolled to a 54-0 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game at Parker Field.

Zuzak scored on runs of 39 and 53 yards, and returned a punt 49 yards for another score, all in the game’s first 13 minutes as the Trojans forged a 29-0 lead.

Stafford made it 42-0 at halftime with TD runs of 36 and 54 yards in the final 1:08 of the first half.

Quarterback Austin Grillo scored on runs of one and 26 yards and threw a pair of two-point conversion passes.

Chartiers-Houston 48, Mapletown 0

Tyler Blumen caught two touchdowns passes from Seth Dunn and returned a punt 62 yards for another score to lead Chartiers-Houston to a 48-0 victory over Mapletown in the Tri-County South Conference.

The win evens C-H’s record in the league at 2-2 and moves the Bucs to 2-4 overall. Mapletown is winless at 0-4, 0-6.

Blumen caught 25-yard TD pass from Dunn in the first quarter and C-H broke the game open with a 20-point second quarter. Sam Dewalt had a six-yard TD run, Blumen and Dunn hooked up on a 40-yard score and Shawn Wheeler scored on a one-yard plunge with 36 seconds left in the first half.

Jimmy Sadler had a 31-yard scoring run in the third quarter and Blumen’s punt return made it 41-0. Anthony lento closed the scoring with a seven-yard TD run.

Belle Vernon 48, Greensburg Salem 14

Mason Pascoe rushed for 256 yards on 19 carries and scored four touchdowns as Belle Vernon cruised to a 48-14 victory over visiting Greensburg Salem in a penalty-filled Class 4A Big Eight Conference game.

Pascoe scored on runs of 48, 70, six and 48 yards, all in the first half, when Belle Vernon (3-1, 4-1) forged a 35-7 lead.

The teams combined for 30 penalties and 290 yards penalty yards.

Central Valley 41, Waynesburg 14

Ameer Dudley threw for two touchdowns and ran foor another to power Central Valley to a 41-14 win over Waynesburg in a Class 3A Tri-County West Conference.

Noah Thompson, Mike Barbuto, Juvon Hall, Anthony Mendicino and Jesse Shively each had a TD for CV (2-4, 2-5). Jaylen Guy rushed for 104 yards on seven tries.

Luke Robinson rushed for 106 yards on 14 carries and scored twice for Waynesburg (0-4, 1-5).

In other games

In a nonconference game, East Allegheny was a 50-8 winner over visiting Carmichaels. Seton-La Salle defeated Fort Cherry 36-0 in the Class 2A Three Rivers Conference. No details were made available to the Observer-Reporter by presstime.
