High school baseball
Completing one of its cleanest performances of the season, Washington played error free behind pitcher Cooper Sharp to snap a four-game losing streak and defeat West Greene, 3-1, in a non-section game Monday at Wild Things Park.
The errors that have doomed the Prexies in several of their first eight games were non-existent, allowing Sharp to strike out seven for a complete-game victory.
Washington (2-7) was led offensively by multi-hit days from Ian McNaught, who went 2-for-3 with a RBI, and Mario Griffin’s two hits. Griffin provided the Prexies some insurance with a run-scoring single with two outs in the sixth inning to take the two-run lead.
Ben Jackson had an RBI triple for West Greene (5-4) in the fifth inning.
College baseball
Tyler Alworth pitched a complete game as host Bethany defeated Washington & Jefferson 5-2 in a PAC game Monday, ending the Presidents’ school-record winning streak at 16 games.
W&J (14-1, 19-8) led 2-1 before Bethany scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Alworth, who scattered eight hits and four walks and but allowed only two runs (one earned) blanked the Presidents over the final three innings. W&J left 12 runners on base.
Mullen Socha gave W&J a 2-1 lead in the sixth with a solo home run. Socha was 3-for-5. Tyler Frazee hit a two-run homer for Bethany (9-8, 19-11) in the seventh inning.
