College baseball

Eight pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout as Washington & Jefferson earned a 6-0 victory over Frostburg State in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.

Nick Drake, a Canon-McMillan graduate, got the start and was credited with the win. The sophomore tossed two scoreless innings before giving way to a slew of relief pitchers as part of a predetermined plan in the non-conference game.

The final six W&J pitchers combined to toss six hitless innings as W&J improved its record to 23-9.

W&J scored one run in each of the first three innings before tacking on two more in the fourth and another single run in the eighth. Mullen Socha hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season.

Frostburg State is 11-16-1.

  • Tyler Bedillion and two relievers combined on a five-hit shutout and California hit three home runs for a 7-0 victory over West Liberty in a non-conference game at Wild Things Park.

Bedillion went seven innings, allowing five hits and one walk. He struck out 10 as Cal improved to 30-9.

Ben Maudie, Eric Fairman and Patrick Brogan each homered.

West Liberty is 8-30.

Wild Things draft 2

The Washington Wild Things selected two players Wednesday at the Frontier League’s two-day open tryout and draft that was held in Joliet, Ill.

Washington, with the final pick of the first round, selected pitcher Joe Jones. In the second round, the Wild Things chose outfielder Joba Ferrell.

Both players have two years of professional experience. Jones, a righthander, played last year for Martinez in the Pacific Association but had a 3-8 record and 7.99 ERA. He was a closer in college at Maryville (Tenn.) and was 3-1 with seven saves during his senior year in 2017.

Ferrell played last year with Trinidad of the Pecos League and finished second in the league in RBI with 95. He had a .378 batting average and hit 16 home runs.

The Gateway Grizzlies had the first pick in the draft and selected Reign Letkeman, a Canadian pitcher who spent three years in the Tampa Bay Rays’ farm system.

The Wild Things will begin spring training this weekend. They open the season May 9 at River City. The home opener is May 17 against Lake Erie.

College softball

Washington & Jefferson and host Waynesburg split a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday. Waynesburg won the opener 12-1 in five innings and W&J bounced back for a 13-5 victory in six innings in the second game.

  • California split a doubleheader against Edinboro in PSAC West action, dropping a 2-1 contest in the opener and winning 4-2 in the second game.

The Vulcans are 7-9 in the division and 11-21 overall. Cal is fifth in the divisional standings and two games back of the final spot for the league tournament with four games left in the regular season. The Fighting Scots are 9-7, 18-16.

In Game 2, senior Taylor Robblee threw a complete-game victory. She scattered 10 hits with six strikeouts.

Pony baseball

Logan Hatfield went 3-for-3 with a double to help Ace Sporting Goods to a 6-4 win over Chambers Insurance in Washington Pony action.

John Henry doubled for Ace (1-0). Landon Urcho went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Chambers (1-1).

  • Printscape won a wild 11-10 season opener late Tuesday night in the Washington Pony league.

Braden Helmkamp had a big game for Printscape with a double and a grand slam. He backed pitcher Shane Mongtomery, who got the win in relief.

Luke Cowden belted a double for Elks Lodge.
