Major leagues: Glasnow 5-0 after Rays beat Red Sox

4 min read

Chris Sale remained winless in six starts this season, giving up Daniel Robertson’s two-run homer in the first inning and Yandy Diaz’s two-run triple in the second as the Boston Red Sox lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 5-2 Sunday.

Sale (0-5) gave up four runs – two earned – four hits and three walks in seven innings with eight strikeouts, lowering his ERA from 7.43 to 6.30. After signing a $160 million, six-year contract in spring training, the 30-year-old left-hander is off to the worst start of his big league career.

Tyler Glasnow (5-0) gave up two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts. He has allowed two runs or fewer in all six starts this season.

After getting swept in Florida by the Red Sox in a three-game series last weekend, the AL East-leading Rays won both games in the rain-shortened series at Fenway Park. Tampa Bay improved to a major league-best 18-9 and has won eight of nine series this year.

Texas 14, Seattle 1: Elvis Andrus, Hunter Pence, Logan Forsythe and Shin-Soo Choo homered, Lance Lynn allowed one run over seven innings and the Texas Rangers routed the Seattle Mariners again, 14-1.

Lynn (3-2) had his best start of the year, matching his season highs in innings pitched and strikeouts (nine) and equaling a season low in runs allowed.

L.A. Angels 7, Kansas City 3: Albert Pujols passed Barry Bonds for third place in career RBIs, hitting a go-ahead, two-run double in the first inning to help the Los Angeles Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3.

Two nights after passing Lou Gehrig for fourth place, Pujols increased his RBIs total to 1,997 when he pulled a fastball from Homer Bailey (2-3) just past third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez. Pujols trails only Hank Aaron (2,297) and Alex Rodriguez (2,086) in RBIs, which became an official statistic in 1920.

Toronto 5, Oakland 4: Brandon Drury hit a tying three-run homer in the 11th inning, Justin Smoak following with a game-winning single and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Oakland 5-4 to complete a six-game season sweep of the Athletics.

Chicago White Sox 4, Detroit 1: Reynaldo Lopez struck out a career-high 14 and allowed two hits in six innings to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers for a sweep of an abbreviated two-game series.

Minnesota 4, Baltimore 1: Max Kepler led off with a home run on Dylan Bundy’s first pitch, Byron Buxton also homered and the Minnesota Twins beat Baltimore 4-1 to sweep their six-game season series against the Orioles.

National League

Washington 7, San Diego 6: Matt Adams homered leading off the 11th inning, and the Washington Nationals beat the Padres 7-6, avoiding their first series sweep at home against San Diego since 2008.

Adams, who was hitless in his first five at-bats, hit a 1-1 fastball from Matt Wisler (1-1) deep into the stands in right field as Washington salvaged the finale of the three-game series. It was Adams’ third career walk-off homer.

St. Louis 5, Cincinnati 2: Jack Flaherty tossed seven scoreless innings, Yadier Molina drove in three runs and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-2.

Atlanta 8, Colorado 7: Josh Donaldson hit a three-run homer in the eighth, Atlanta’s fourth home run of the game, and the Braves’ bullpen survived a ninth-inning scare for an 8-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

N.Y. Mets 5, Milwaukee 2: Reigning NL MVP Christian Yelich and Mets star Robinson Cano were both pulled with injuries while New York beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 Sunday on J.D. Davis’ tiebreaking, pinch-hit single in the seventh inning.

Yelich left in the fifth with low back discomfort, and it was unclear when he was injured. He singled and was retired on Jesus Aguilar’s groundball double play in the fourth. Yelich dealt with back issues last season.

Philadelphia 5, Miami 1: Zach Eflin threw a seven-hitter, the first complete game for a Phillies pitcher since September 2017, and Philadelphia beat the Miami Marlins 5-1.

Interleague

N.Y. Yankees 11, San Francisco 5: DJ LeMahieu and Gio Urshela became the latest Yankees to get hurt as New York completed a three-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants with an 11-5 win that included another long home run by Gary Sanchez.
