High school wrestling
Burgettstown came within the final three weight classes of shutting out South Side Beaver before settling for a 66-12 non-section victory over the Rams.
Joey Sentipal (126), Ryan Green (145) and Jacob Noyes (152) each won by fall for the Blue Devils, who won by forfeit.
- Washington defeated Jefferson-Morgan 60-18 in a non-section match that had only two bouts contested.
Kyle Slesh (132) and Shalik Cox (182) of Washington each had a pin. The remaining weights classes were forfeits, except for a no match at 220 pounds.
- Bentworth was a 60-12 winner over vsiting South park in a non-section match.
Presidents Cup
Tiger Woods lightly pumped his fist with another birdie. He raised his hands over his head in applause to salute a brilliant play by Justin Thomas that led to another hole won. He thoroughly enjoyed his return to competition in the Presidents Cup.
His match won, Woods took the radio and inserted the ear piece as he resumed his role as U.S. captain.
And there was little else to cheer.
Ernie Els and his inspired International team won the day, and won it big.
Els got solid performances from Adam Scott and Louis Oosthuizen and remarkable play from his rookies that led to a 4-1 lead after the opening session of fourballs Thursday.
“I didn’t envision 4-1, no,” Els said.
In the NHL
Robby Fabbri scored twice on fortuitous bounces off the same Winnipeg player, and the Detroit Red Wings snapped a 12-game winless streak with a 5-2 victory over the Jets on Thursday night.
- Devon Toews and Mathew Barzal had power-plays goals in a 3:51 span early in the second period and Thomas Greiss made 32 saves to help the New York Islanders beat the Florida Panthers, 3-1.
- Steven Stamkos had two goals to extend his recent tear and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the suddenly slumping Boston Bruins, 3-2.
- Jack Eichel had two goals and extended his NHL-leading point streak to 15 games, Victor Oloffson scored in the third period, and the Buffalo Sabres beat the Nashville Predators, 4-3.
Former NFL players accused of scheme
Ten former NFL players were charged in a multimillion-dollar scheme to defraud the league’s health care benefit program by submitting false claims for medical equipment, including devices used on horses, the Justice Department said Thursday.
The players were charged in two separate indictments filed in federal court in Kentucky, accusing them of conspiracy, wire fraud and healthcare fraud. Prosecutors allege they submitted nearly $4 million in phony claims, leading to payouts of about $3.4 million between June 2017 and December 2018.
Those charged include five former players on the Washington Redskins, including Clinton Portis and Carlos Rogers.
The players claimed to have purchased hyperbaric oxygen chambers, ultrasound machines and electromagnetic therapy devices that were designed to be used on horses, he said.
