In the NHL
Pierre-Luc Dubois scored early in the third period and Gustav Nyquist added an empty-net goal in the closing seconds, helping the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-3 Tuesday night.
Columbus has won two straight for the first time in nearly a month. Detroit has lost 14 of its last 16 games.
- Anze Kopitar scored at 3:23 of overtime and the Los Angeles Kings rallied to beat the Boston Bruins, 4-3.
- Anthony Cirelli scored with 19 seconds left in overtime and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Ottawa Senators, 4-3.
Cirelli split two defenders near the blue line and lifted a shot past Marcus Hogberg.
- Nick Bonino had the tiebreaking goal late in the second period as the Nashville Predators got seven consecutive scores to rally for an 8-3 win over the New York Islanders.
Craig Smith had two goals and an assist, Filip Forsberg, Calle Jarnkrok, Roman Josi and Ryan Johansen each had a goal and an assist, and Rocco Grimaldi also scored to help the Predators win for the second straight night and the fourth time in six games. Pekka Rinne stopped 27 shots.
- The Philadelphia Flyers honored cancer-stricken teammate Oskar Lindblom and beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-1 behind goals by Claude Giroux, David Kase and Jake Voracek.
In college basketball
Keyontae Johnson scored 19 points to lead Florida to a 83-51 rout of Providence on Tuesday night in the second game of the inaugural Air Force Reserve Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational.
- Josh Williams hit four free throws in the final four seconds of the game to allow Robert Morris to hold off Central Michigan, 83-79.
The Chippewas took a brief lead with just under four minutes to play when David DiLeo hit a 3 to make it 71-70, but AJ Bramah missed a layup, grabbed the offensive rebound while drawing a foul. His two free throws put Robert Morris ahead for good.
In the NBA
Rookie RJ Barrett scored a career-high 27 points, and the New York Knicks ran away from Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks for a 143-120 win on Tuesday night.
Mitchell Robinson had a career-high 22 points along with 13 rebounds, and Marcus Morris also scored 22 for the Knicks, who have won three of four after a 10-game losing streak.
- Domantas Sabonis scored 26 points and Malcolm Brogdon made a tiebreaking reverse layup with 36.4 seconds left to give the Indiana Pacers a 105-102 victory over Los Angeles, snapping the Lakers’ 14-game road winning streak.
Brogdon dribbled past Dwight Howard and then used the rim to protect the ball as he made the shot. Sabonis followed by hitting one of two free throws with 10.7 seconds remaining.
LeBron James had 20 points, nine rebounds and nine assists but missed a 3-pointer that would have given the Lakers the lead with 11.7 seconds to go. Los Angeles also missed two shots on its final possession while trying to force overtime.
- Malik Monk scored 14 of his season-high 23 points in the fourth quarter, and the Charlotte Hornets spoiled De’Aaron Fox’s return from injury with a 110-102 win over the Sacramento Kings.
Cody Zeller had 17 points and nine rebounds, and Bismack Biyombo added 10 points and 12 rebounds as the Hornets (13-17) won for the fourth time in five games.
- Washington Wizards rookie forward Rui Hachimura will miss at least the team’s next five games after hurting his groin.
The Wizards said Tuesday that Hachimura will be re-evaluated when Washington returns from a four-game road trip that runs from Friday through Dec. 26.
