Finishing a three-point play with a free throw early in the second half gave West Greene senior Nathan Brudnock 1,000 career points as the Pioneers defeated winless Bentworth, 77-52 in a non-section game.

Brudnock made the free throw with 7:44 remaining in the third quarter. He led all scorers with 27 points.

West Greene (3-6) found its scoring touch immediately, leading 19-3 after the first quarter. Ben Jackson and Austin Crouse each chipped in 12 points for the Pioneers.

Bentworth (0-9) was paced by Mason Gurewicz’s 19 points. Shawn Dziak had 17 points.

Burgettstown 58, Mohawk 56: None of Bobby Kozares’ 16 points mattered more than his game-winning 15-foot jumper at the buzzer as Burgettstown defeated Mohawk, 58-56, in a Class 2A Section 3 game.

The basket by Kozares gave the Blue Devils their third win in the last four games. Scott Ferris scored 13 points and Cole Shergi also reached double figures for Burgettstown (1-2, 6-4) with 11.

Avella 76, Mapletown 65: Facing a 13-point halftime deficit, Avella scored 54 points in the second half and completed the comeback victory over Class A Section 2 foe Mapletown, 76-65.

The Eagles were down 12 points entering the fourth quarter but tripled the scoring from Mapletown in the fourth, 33-11, for the victory. The 33-point fourth quarter is more than Avella (2-1, 3-7) has scored in four games this season.

Mapletown (0-4, 0-9) was paced by 19 points from Lance Stevenson. Chuck Lash had 12 points. Ryan Tuttle and Matt Atwood each scored 11.

Brentwood 69, Chartiers-Houston 61: A slow first half doomed Chartiers-Houston as the Bucs had their three-game winning streak come to an end in a 69-61 loss to Brentwood in a Class 2A Section 2 game.

Chartiers-Houston (1-2, 6-5) only scored 23 points in the opening 16 minutes, falling behind 37-23 going into halftime.

Despite a better second half, including a 22-point fourth quarter, the deficit was too much to overcome. Evan Simpson scored 15 points to lead the Bucs. Austin Arnold and Anthony Tomassetti each reached double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Brentwood (2-2, 5-5) was paced by C.J. Zieglar’s 14 points. Zach Keib and Antonio Harris each finished with 11.

Ramsey led all scorers with 28 points for California (1-2, 5-3). No other player for the Trojans reached double figures.

Khalil Smith led a balanced offensive effort from Serra Catholic (4-0, 7-2), winners of six consecutive games. Smith had 16 points. Jimmy Moon scored 14 points for the Eagles.
