Bucs’ Vazquez added
to All-Star roster
Pittsburgh closer Felipe Vazquez, New York Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka and Milwaukee right-hander Brandon Woodruff have been added to the rosters for Tuesday’s All-Star Game.
They replace Arizona’s Zack Greinke, who will be attending to a personal matter, Toronto’s Marcus Stroman, who has a strained pectoral muscle; and Brewers closer Josh Hader, who has back stiffness.
Vazquez entered Saturday’s game against Milwaukee with a 2.19 ERA and 19 saves. In 37 innings, he has accumulated 59 strikeouts. It is the second straight season he is an All-Star.
Tanaka was selected for the 2014 AL team but didn’t pitch because of a right elbow injury.
Tanaka is 5-5 with a 3.86 ERA in 18 starts.
Woodruff, a first-time All-Star, is 10-3 with a 3.91 ERA.
Zion Williamson
shut down
Zion Williamson’s summer league is over.
The New Orleans Pelicans say the No. 1 pick in this year’s NBA draft will not play any more at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas because of a bruised left knee. The team stressed the move is precautionary.
Williamson scored 11 points in nine minutes of his debut game against New York on Friday night. But he took a knee-to-knee hit in the first half and was ruled out at halftime of a game that was eventually shortened after the tremors of an earthquake were felt in Las Vegas.
Pelicans Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin says Williamson “will move forward from this incident without issue.”
Williamson will continue taking part in training and conditioning with the Pelicans’ performance team.
