WPIAL hires assistant executive director

The WPIAL announced Monday that North Hills athletic director Amy Scheuneman will become the assistant executive director for the organization beginning July 1.

In addition, WPIAL executive director Tim O’Malley was given a three-year contract extension.

The position makes Scheuneman in line to potentially succeed O’Malley, who has led the WPIAL for 14 years.

Scheuneman has worked in athletic administration for the past 16 years in three school districts including North Hills (2016-2019), Bethel Park (2006-2016) and Avonworth (2003-2006).

Kershaw could miss opening day start

Clayton Kershaw might not be on the mound when the two-time NL champion Los Angeles Dodgers start the season.

The lefty ace is working his way back from shoulder soreness that caused him to shut down his spring training.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said “that’s fair” when asked Monday whether Kershaw might miss the opener March 28 against Arizona at Dodger Stadium.

“There’s just way too much importance put on the opening-day roster. The No. 1 thing is for him to be ready and to feel confident physically and mentally,” Roberts said, “and when that is, it is.”

Kershaw has made a franchise-record eight consecutive opening day starts, and was tabbed to do so again when the Dodgers arrived in Arizona.

But a couple days later, the three-time Cy Young Award winner had some shoulder soreness that caused him to halt his throwing program. He’s taking anti-inflammatory medication.

W.Va. PGA event moves to September

The PGA Tour’s annual stop in West Virginia has officially moved to September.

The Greenbrier resort announced Monday that A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier will be held Sept. 12-15 on the Old White TPC in White Sulphur Springs. In previous years the tournament typically was held around the Independence Day holiday in July.

The tournament will be part of the PGA Tour’s fall schedule, taking place three weeks after the Tour Championship in Atlanta. The tournament honors the nation’s military members and first responders and will occur the week of the anniversary of the September 2001 U.S. terrorist attacks.

In college basketball

Kyle Guy, Ty Jerome and De’Andre Hunter led a long-range assault, combining for 18 3-pointers as No.2 Virginia broke open a tight game in the second half and cruised to a 79-53 victory over Syracuse on Monday night.

Virginia (15-2 Atlantic Coast Conference, 27-2), whose only two losses were to Duke, has won seven straight since losing for the second time to the Blue Devils and leads North Carolina by a half game in the ACC.

Syracuse (10-7, 19-11) was coming off a solid road win at Wake Forest, but the Orange’s vaunted zone defense was torched for eight 3-pointers during a 27-3 spurt. After falling behind by one point, the Cavaliers outscored Syracuse 37-10 over the final 15 minutes and set a record for 3-pointers allowed by the Orange.

In the NHL

Kyle Brodziak scored the go-ahead goal to cap a three-goal outburst over the final 3:31 of the second period, and rallied the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night.

Leon Draisait scored his team-leading 41st and added an assist, to extend his point streak to 11 games in which he had combined for nine goals and eight assists. Connor McDavid set up two goals in a game Edmonton overcame a 3-1 second-period deficit. Defenseman Darnell Nurse and Zack Kassian also scored for Edmonton, which won its third straight in closing a five-game trip at 4-1-1.
