Cal U offers several events for Women’s History Month

California University is offering a series of events to commemorate Women’s History Month, which officials see as an important part of the campus mission.

“I think higher education gives an opportunity for students to expand their perspective of the world and develop critical thinking skills and expose them to new content and discipline and opportunities,” said Dr. Mara McClintock-Comeaux, associate professor in Dept. of Social Work and director of Women’s Studies.

“Traditional curriculum is focused on traditional experiences, usually white men’s experiences,” McClintock-Comeaux continued. “Until that time when curriculum includes more, we focus on a month to try to bring in learning and experiences outside the mainstream. “

Sheleta Camarda-Webb, director of Multicultural Affairs and Diversity, noted these months can integrate several experiences, such as being a woman along with other cultures and heritages.

“We are all so much more than just one thing,” said Camarda-Webb. “We want to recognize and highlight the significance of the specific month and the national celebration,”

Upcoming events include as noted in a university press release:

n March 19 – “The Human Face of Immigration,” 9:30 a.m., Keystone Hall Room 202. A panel discussion via Skype will focus on experiences with recent immigration policies. Sponsor: Women’s Studies and the Women’s Center.

n March 20 – “Alive Inside,” 4 p.m., Keystone Hall Room 211. The documentary follows visionaries in healthcare including social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory. Sponsor: Department of Social Work.

n March 26 – “Free the Girls,” 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Natali Student Center. Educational content and fun activities will take place throughout the building to bring awareness and knowledge of the Free the Girls campaign and the international problem of human trafficking. Free the Girls is an international organization that accepts financial donations as well as donations of new and gently used bras to help human trafficking survivors start their own businesses selling bras. Donation boxes are located in campus buildings. Sponsor: Women’s Studies and the Women’s Center.

n March 28 – RBG, 11 a.m., Vulcan Theatre, Natali Student Center. This 2018 film covers the life and career of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Sponsor: Women’s Studies and the Women’s Center.
