Bentworth hires
football coach
Bentworth promoted assistant John Knabb as its head football coach.
Knabb, a former coach at South Park and Peters Township, was an assistant last year for the Bearcats, who finished 5-5 and in fourth place in the Tri-County South Conference.
Bentworth was in search of a head coach after Ron Skiles surprisingly resigned in January.
Cal’s Means earns
conference award
California University’s Jae’Len Means was selected as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.
Means, a senior, broke his own school record in the 200-meter dash, placing fifth overall in the finals at the NCAA Championships two weeks ago with a time of 21.34.
He won the PSAC title in both the 60-meter dash and 200 dash this winter.
Means is a two-time NCAA All-American.
Mays honored
by PAC
Waynesburg University freshman Silas Mays was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Men’s Track Rookie of the Week.
The South Fayette graduate won the 800 run Saturday at Muskingum’s Muskie Duals in 2:01.14.
At the UNC-Wilmington-Wendy’s Seahawk Invitational earlier in March, Mays finished third in the 800 and was on the Yellow Jackets’ 1,600 relay with a time of 3:36.18.
In the NHL
Ryan Callahan scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period, and the Tampa Bay Lightning picked up their seventh straight win with a 6-3 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.
Steven Stamkos had a goal and two assists and Tyler Johnson, Anthony Cirelli, Brayden Point and Ryan McDonagh all scored for the Lightning, who scored four unanswered goals in the third period to erase a 3-2 deficit.
- Aleksander Barkov scored two goals and Jonathan Huberdeau had three assists as the Florida Panthers beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-2 Thursday night.
Mike Hoffman and MacKenzie Weegar also scored goals for the Panthers, who won for the first time in three games. Roberto Luongo made 32 saves and broke a five-game losing streak. Evgenii Dadonov added two assists. Brad Richardson and Michael Grabner scored for the Coyotes, who lost their third straight.
- Patrice Bergeron scored twice and reached the 30-goal mark for the fifth time as streaking Boston Bruins beat the injury-ravaged New Jersey Devils 5-1 to open a six-point lead over Toronto in the race for second place in the Atlantic Division.
Dave Pastrnak, Danton Heinen and David Backes also scored for the Bruins, who are 16-3-1 in their last 20 games. Drew Stafford scored for the Devils, ending a 34-game goal-scoring drought.
Pirates beat Baltimore
Jung Ho Kang hit a game-ending grand slam to lift the Pirates. Jonah Davis, a 15th-round pick in last year’s draft, hit two home runs in his first career spring training game, and Francisco Cervelli added a solo shot in a 7-5 win over Baltimore.
Chris Archer pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed three runs while striking out six.
David Hess, one of three pitchers vying for the final two spots in the Orioles rotation, allowed two solo homers over five innings. Trey Mancini homered off Archer.
In the NBA
Kemba Walker scored 31 points, rookie Miles Bridges had 11 points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double, and the Charlotte Hornets handed the Minnesota Timberwolves their fifth straight loss, 113-106.
Jeremy Lamb added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Hornets, who won for only the fifth time in their last 16 games. Karl Anthony-Towns led Minnesota with 21 points and 16 rebounds.
Nikola Jokic had 15 points and 11 assists, and the Denver Nuggets beat the fading Washington Wizards 113-108 for their fifth straight victory.
Paul Millsap, Gary Harris, Jamal Murray and Torrey Craig also added 15 points for the Nuggets, who were playing for the first time since clinching their first playoff berth in six years with Monday’s win in Boston.
