High school baseball
Four Canon-McMillan pitchers combined on a six-hitter and the Big Macs scored three times in the fifth inning to hold off Plymouth Whitemarsh 6-3 Saturday in Vero Beach, Fla.
Starter Alex Gregory and relievers Justin Nailor, Tyler Greenleaf and Austin Able kept the Big Macs in the lead after building a 2-0 lead after three innings.
Brandon Rea had a double among his two hits for Canon-McMillan (2-0). Cam Weston and Noah Burke each had two singles for the Big Macs, who led 2-1 before scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth. Weston had a run-scoring single that made it 3-1 and the Big Macs scored their next two runs on a wild pitch and a passed ball.
- Cole Perry had a double and went 3-for-4 to lead Charleroi to an 8-1 win over Bentworth in the season-opener for both teams.
Dave Szersen struck out 5 and also went 3-for-4. Geno Pelligrini and Joe Caruso each had a double.
Isiah Russell had an RBI double for Bentworth and Aaron Bunner also doubled.
- Avonworth used a 5-run second inning to come away with a 9-5 win over Trinity in Coco Beach, Fla.
Jack Banco had a double for the Hillers (1-2).
High school softball
Hannah Binek doubled and drove in two runs as South Fayette defeated Portmought (Ohio), 6-5, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
South Fayette split two games Saturday, losing to South Allegheny 9-4.
South Fayette (1-3) sued three two-run innings to build a 6-3 lead, then held off a seventh-inning rally by Portsmouth.
Winning pitcher Madison Potteiger allowed three runs (none earned) over six innings and Mara Iagnemma got the final three outs for a save.
Ally Schraeder hit a triple and Whitney Cole doubled for South Fayette.
Against South Allegheny, Binek and Sydney Kormick each had two hits and drove in two runs for the Lions. One of Binek’s hits was a double, the lone extra-base hit for South Fayette.
South Allegheny led 2-0 before it tacked on five more runs in the fifth inning.
- Jordan Tallman fired a one-hit shutout with 15 strikeouts as Latrobe defeated defending WPIAL Class 4A champion belle vernon 4-0 in the season opener.
Tallman, backed by a solo homer from Makayla Munchinski, allowed only a single by Ally Pacak. The Leopards did draw five walks.
Belle Vernon pitcher Sophie Godzak struck out seven.
- Kaci Alderson went 3-for-3 with a triple, 3 RBI and 3 runs to help Chartiers-Houston to a 13-0 five-inning win over Hickory in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Winning pitcher Ella Brookman had a double and drove in four runs for the 3-0 Bucs. Karlyn Bayer went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Kasey Scears also doubled.
Ella Holland doubled for Hickory.
College baseball
Washington & Jefferson, setting a season-high for runs, rolled to a 17-5 victory over Thiel in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener for both team Saturday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.
James Artale homered and drove in three runs, and Dante Dalesandro drove in four runs, including three with a double in the Presidents’ 12-run sixth inning that gave W&J (6-7) a 17-2 lead.
Winning pitcher Ben Marsico pitched 52/3 innings. He was followed by four relievers.
- California swept its PSAC West Division-opening doubleheader against Indiana, 3-1 and 4-2, at Wild Things Park.
Nick Riggle (3-0) pitched a one-hitter in the opener, allowing only Nick Hess’ solo home run to start the top of the second inning. Riggle struck out six and did not issue a walk.
Ben Maudie hit a solo homer for Cal (2-0, 14-3).
Bradyn Kail improved his record to 4-0 by pitching two-run ball over six innings in the second game. Maudie’s RBI single in Cal’s four-run fifth inning gave the Vulcans the lead at 2-1.
Reliever Richie Serignese got the final three outs of the game for his second save.
- Waynesburg scored five times in the top of the first inning and cruised to an 8-1 victory over Geneva in the opener of a PAC doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets completed the doubleheader and three-game series sweep by winning the nightcap, 10-6, scoring six runs in the top of the ninth inning.
Waynesburg (3-0, 9-8) trailed trailed the series finale 5-1 after seven innings. The Yellow Jackets scored three times in the eighth, and after giving up a run in the bottom of the frame put together the six-run ninth, scoring all the runs with two outs.
Brandon Durbin had a game-tying two-run single and Luke Winterbottom’s two-run double gave Waynesburg the lead.
Nate Gearhart was the winning pitcher in relief.
In the opener, winning pitcher Ty Wickline tossed a three-hitter and struck out seven. Tyler Woodrow drove in three runs.
Women’s lacrosse
Marymount was a 16-7 winner over Washington & Jefferson Saturday evening in Arlington, Va.
Sofiya Bobrovnikova had three goals for W&J. It was her second consecutive three-goal game.
The loss drops W&J’s record to 2-5.
In the NHL
Josh Bailey scored twice, stopping a 12-game drought, and the New York Islanders beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 Saturday.
Nick Leddy and Brock Nelson also scored for New York, which had dropped two in a row and three of four overall. Robin Lehner made 22 stops.
The Islanders (43-25-7) moved within a point of idle Washington for first place in the Metropolitan Division.
- Blake Coleman and Pavel Zacha scored in the fifth and sixth rounds of the shootout and New Jersey Devils hurt Arizona’s playoff chances with a 2-1 victory, sending the Coyotes to their fourth straight loss.
Drew Stafford scored in regulation for New Jersey, and MacKenzie Blackwood made 23 saves in regulation and stopped five of six chances in the shootout.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored for Arizona and Darcy Kuemper had 31 saves.
- Colin Wilson scored his first goal in more than a month, Philipp Grubauer stopped 29 shots and the playoff-chasing Colorado Avalanche earned their fourth straight win by holding off the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-2.
J.T. Compher and Sven Andrighetto also scored. Derick Brassard added an empty-netter for an Avalanche team in the thick of the Western Conference wild-card hunt with seven games remaining. They entered the day a point behind Minnesota for the last spot.
- Brady Tkachuk scored his second goal of the game 2:09 into overtime as the Ottawa Senators beat Edmonton 4-3 and put a crimp in the Oilers’ slim playoff hopes.
Local hockey
teams in nationals
Four local ice hockey players will be competing for the Steel City Select 14-Under team that will compete in the girls national competition April 4-8 in Amherst, N.Y.
Svetlana Yarosh and Kelci Stack of Canon-McMillan and Kaleigh Heard and Marley Webster of Trinity are on the team coached by Jason Evans.
Brynn Chaplik, Danielle Karol and Sarah Pointek of Canon-McMillan and Jenna Pacich of Peters Township play on the 16-under team that also is in the national tournament.
This is the fourth year in a row the two teams qualified for the national tournament. The 14U team is 38-11-5 and ranked 16th in the country. The 16U team is 29-15-9 and ranked 15th in the nation.
In the NBA
Kemba Walker scored 18 of his game-high 36 points in the fourth quarter and the Charlotte Hornets rallied to beat the Boston Celtics 124-117 Saturday night.
It was Walker’s 23rd game of 30 or more points this season. He added 11 rebounds and nine assists.
