College baseball
California University completed a four-game series sweep of Indiana on Sunday by sweeping a doubleheader from the host Crimson Hawks, 6-3 and 7-6.
Cal has won six in a row and improves to 4-0 in the PSAC’s West Division and 16-3 overall. IUP falls to 0-4, 6-11.
Tyler Eritz threw a complete-game seven-hitter in the opener to improve his record to 3-0. Five different players drove in runs for the Vulcans, who trailed 3-2 before scoring four times in the top of the seventh. Eric Fairman hit a run-scoring double to give Cal the lead.
In the second game, Cal came from behind again. The Vulcans erased a 4-2 deficit by scoring five times in the sixth inning, including a tiebreaking three-run homer by Fairman.
Damian Clarke was the winning pitcher and Dylan Brosky got the final three outs for a save.
- Washington & Jefferson completed a weekend series sweep of PAC rival Thiel by sweeping a doubleheader in Greenville, 16-5 and 8-2. The Presidents scored 41 runs in the three games.
Josh Griffin hit a grand slam in W&J’s 10-run fourth inning in the opener. Griffin finished the game with six RBI on two hits. Josh Crummer also hit a home run.
Griffin homerd again in the second game, a three-run shot in the seventh inning, and his four RBI gave him 10 on the day. Michael Zito also hit a three-run homer for the Presidents (3-0, 8-7).
Winning pitcher Nick Drake pitched 5 2/3 innings.
High school baseball
Winning pitcher Mark Lehman and reliever Rich Ferris combined on a three-hitter and Peters Township scored two runs in the sixth inning to edge Fordham Prep, 2-1, Sunday.
The Indians scored the game’s first run when Dax Ploskina doubled and scored two batters later on an error by the Fordham left fielder on a ball hit by Matthew Levy. Tom Colcombe was inserted as a courtesy runner for Levy and eventually scored the Indians’ second run, racing home from third base on a passed ball to make it 2-0.
Lehman threw five shutout innings. He issued only one hit and one walk. Ferris followed on the mound for two innings and earning a save. Fordham scored its lone run in the seventh on a leadoff double and one-out single but couldn’t force extra innings.
- Winning pitcher Richie Dell struck out 10 and South Fayette unleashed a 13-hit attack in a 15-1 thumping of Kennedy Catholic in a five-inning game.
Dell, Christian Gabriel, Joey Alcorn and Mitch Dunay each had two hits and a double for South Fayette, which scored eight runs in the third inning.
High school softball
Savannah Berklovich’s tie-breaking RBI single in the fifth inning sent Frazier to a 5-3 victory at Belle Vernon in a non-section game Sunday.
The Commodores (1-0) scored once in the first and twice in the second off BV starting pitcher Vanessa Porter to take a 3-0 lead. The Leopards (0-2) tied it with a run in the third and a two-run homer by Sophie Godzak in the fourth.
Courtesy runner Skylar Hone, in for Juliann Johnson, scored on Berklovich’s single to center against Godzak to put Frazier ahead. The Commodores tacked on an insurance run in the seventh.
Winning pitcher Logan Hartman struck out nine.
In the NBA
Giannis Antetokounmpo showed few signs he was bothered by an ailing right ankle, getting 26 points and 10 rebounds to lift to Milwaukee Bucks over the Cleveland Cavaliers 127-105 Sunday.
Antetokounmpo was listed as questionable after missing two of the three previous games with an ankle sprain. He made 11 of 16 shots.
• Danilo Gallinari scored 26 points to extend the best scoring streak of his career, and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the New York Knicks 124-113 for their fifth straight victory.
