High school baseball roundup: Belle Vernon ends Ringgold’s winning streak

Garrett Greco hit a game-tying two-run single in the fifth inning and Joshua Hoffman’s squeeze bunt scored Mason Pascoe with the go-ahead run Wednesday night as Belle Vernon rallied for a 4-3 victory over Class 4A Section 3 leader Ringgold, ending the Rams’ seven-game winning streak.

Ringgold (9-2, 10-4) led 3-0 before Belle Vernon (7-4, 8-5) did all its scoring in the bottom of the fifth. Winning pitcher Erik Pietrantoni and reliever Andrew Kostelnik combined on a three-hitter. Kostelnik got the final six outs for a save.

Ringgold’s Josh Peters struck out seven over six innings.

Brownsville 10, Chartiers-Houston 5: Winning pitcher Rocco Frisco hit two doubles, including one in Brownsville’s five-run fourth inning, as the Falcons rallied to upset Chartiers-Houston 10-5 in Class 2A Section 1.

The loss dropped C-H (7-2, 9-4) into second place in the section, a half-game behind idle Carmichaels.

Brownsville (5-4, 9-4) led 4-0 before C-H scored five times in the top of the fourth. Brownsville regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. The Falcons tied the score on a bases-loaded hit batsman. Frisco then smacked his two-run double that gave Brownsville the lead and Chris Moats followed with a two-run single.

Chartiers-Houston outhit Brownsville 13-6 but five errors by the Bucs led to five unearned runs.

C-H’s Austin Kuslock was 3-for-4 with a double. Alex Siege and Zack Baird also went 3-for-4.

Baldwin 3, Canon-McMillan 2: Nick Dolan lofted a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and Baldwin held off Canon-McMillan 3-2 in a Class 6A Section 3 game at Wild Things Park.

Dolan, the winning pitcher, and reliever Andy Sopata combined on a four-hitter. Sopata had the game’s only extra-base hit, a double.

Canon-McMillan (4-5, 8-7) had tied the score at 2-2 on a sac fly by Alex Gregory in the fourth inning. Baldwin, which was held to five hits, improved to 3-7, 5-8.

Canon-McMillan starting pitcher Cam Weston struck out eight in six innings.

Burgettstown 12, Bentworth 0: Burgettstown, sparked by a five-run first inning, cruised to a 12-0 victory over host Bentworth in five innings in Class 2A Section 1.

The Blue Devils (2-7, 4-9) have won two in a row and prevented Bentworth (3-6, 7-8) from moving into a tie for fourth place and the final playoff berth from the section. The Bearcats committed six errors.

Winning pitcher Nathan Klodowski threw a one-hitter and struck out five. Klodowski drove in three runs and Scott Ferris went 3-for-3 for Burgettstown.

A single by Jacob Kisner was Bentworth’s lone hit.

Frazier 4, Fort Cherry 3: Nate Stefancik’s bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Chase Hazelbaker and gave Frazier a 4-3 come-from-behind win over visiting Fort Cherry in Class 2A Section 1.

The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Fort Cherry (4-5, 7-7) scored three times. Lane Miller had an RBI single and Jake Tkach belted a two-run double.

Frazier (3-6, 6-7) pushed across one run in the sixth and forced extra innings with a two-run seventh. Daniel Olbrys, who went 4-for-5, hit a two-out RBI double that made the score 3-3.

Fort Cherry starting pitcher Ryan Craig allowed only one run over 5 1/3 innings. Frazier starter Trevor Hayes and two relievers combined on a six-hitter. Frazier left 12 runners on base.

Keystone Oaks 4, McGuffey 0: Keystone Oaks rode the left arm of starting pitcher Sam Tortorella in a 4-0 win over visiting McGuffey to remain in first place in Class 3A Section 3.

Tortorella, a junior, struck out 13 and surrendered only three hits to the Highlanders in the complete-game, shutout victory.

Keystone Oaks (9-1, 11-2) then used doubles from Evan Weissert, Jeremy Wytiaz and Nate Brestensky to score three runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Jake Orr and Ryan Sullivan both doubled for McGuffey (7-2, 8-4), which remains a half game ahead of Beth-Center for second place in the section.

Avella 14, Mapletown 9: Kenneth Rush and Isiah Work each drove in three run to help Avella rally to beat Mapletown, 14-9, in a Class 2-A game.

Ty Jaworoski went 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs for the Eagles (4-5, 5-7). Blaze Allen went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Chuckie Lash tripled and drove in two runs for Mapletown (0-8, 0-11), which led 9-6 after four innings. Zach Rockwell had two RBI.

California 6, Jefferson-Morgan 1: Jacob Piktel cracked a three-run double in a four-run third inning to pace California to a 6-1 win over Jefferson-Morgan inn a Section 2-A game.

Nate Zemany also doubled for California (9-0, 11-1). Payton Conte struck out six.

Kyle Clayton drove in the only run for Jefferson-Morgan (4-4, 4-8).
