High school roundup: Chartiers-Houston rallies, deals Vincentian first loss
Joey Christy hit a two-run single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning that gave Chartiers-Houston a 9-8 come-from-behind win over previously undefeated Vincentian Academy in a non-section baseball game Thursday.
Vincentian led 8-5 entering the bottom of the seventh, but Chartiers-Houston pulled to within 8-7 on an RBI single by Chase Bitz and a run-scoring passed ball. That set up Christy’s line-drive hit to center field that scored Austin Kuslock and Bitz.
Zack Baird, the fourth C-H pitcher, was the winner, throwing 1 2/3 innings.
Jimmy Sadler had a big game for the playoff-bound Bucs (13-4), going 3-for-3 with a home run, double, three runs and two RBI. Destin Weiser drove in three runs and Josh Colletti scored three times.
Vincentian Academy is 11-1.
Waynesburg 6, Albert Gallatin 1: Waynesburg prepared for the upcoming WPIAL Class 3A playoffs by defeating host Albert Gallatin 6-1 in a non-section game.
Winning pitcher Tyler Switalski and reliever Ryley Metheny combined on a three-hitter. Switalski allowed one unearned run and struck out seven in 6 1/3 innings to help the Raiders improve their record to 11-5. Waynesburg will take a six-game winning streak into the postseason.
The Raiders scored all the runs they would need in a three-run second inning. Luke Robinson led Waynesburg at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles. Trevor Stephenson had a pair of singles.
Peters Township 2, South Park 0: Three Peters Township pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Indians blanked South Park 2-0 in a non-section game.
Starter Dax Ploskina pitched three innings and struck out five, Andrew Cisney relieved for 3 1/3 innings and Jackson McCloskey got the final two outs for the Indians, who improved their record to 13-6.
Peters Township scratched out single runs in the second and third innings against South Park (13-7), which had won three in a row.
Ploskina and Matthew Levy drove in the PT runs.
Canon-McMillan 7, Butler 4: Canon-McMillan rode a five-run first inning to a 7-4 victory over Butler in a non-section game.
Nick Popielarczyk tripled, drove in two runs and allowed one hit over four winnings on the mound as the Big Macs finish the season with a 9-9 record.
Cam Weston and Brandon Adams had a double for the Big Macs.
Monessen 22, Washington 8: Monessen took advantage of 14 walks by Washington pitchers to beat the Prexies 22-8 in a five-inning non-section game.
Sonny Thomas drove in a pair of runs for Monessen (12-5), which scored nine runs in the third inning and eight in the fourth.
Cam Folo was the winning pitcher.
Washington’s Asa Chornik hit a triple and Ian McNaught drove in two runs. The Prexies end the season with a 3-15 record.
Seneca Valley 3, South Fayette 2: Mark Trotta drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning to force in the game-winning run in Seneca Valley’s 3-2 victory over South Fayette in a non-section game.
South Fayette (11-7) led 2-1 before Seneca Valley (12-6) tied it with a run in the fifth inning.
Mitch Dunay went 2-for-2 and scored a run for the Lions.
Softball
Monessen 13, Beth-Center 5: Kendelle Waston went 3-for-4 with a triple, double and four RBI, powering Monessen to a 13-5 victory over visiting Beth-Center in a non-section game.
Maddie Telegraphis and Gabby Simpson each had a double for Monessen (6-9) to back the winning pitching of Hannah Yorty, who struck out eight.
