Penguins set roster
The Pittsburgh Penguins have finalized their 23-man roster.
Pittsburgh’s roster includes 13 forwards: Zach Aston-Reese, Nick Bjugstad, Teddy Blueger, Sidney Crosby, Alex Galchenyuk, Jake Guentzel, Patric Hornqvist, Dominik Kahun, Evgeni Malkin, Jared McCann, Bryan Rust, Dominik Simon and Brandon Tanev, eight defensemen: Brian Dumoulin, Erik Gudbranson, Jack Johnson, Kris Letang, Marcus Pettersson, Juuso Riikola, Chad Ruhwedel and Justin Schultz) and goaltenders Tristan Jarry and Matt Murray. Twenty of the 23 players skated for the Penguins last year. They are joined by newcomers Galchenyuk (trade with Arizona), Kahun (trade with Chicago) and Tanev (free agency).
Defenseman John Marino and goaltender Casey DeSmith have been re-assigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League.
Zach Trotman has been placed on long-term injured reserve following sports hernia surgery last week. Bryan Rust will be also placed on long-term injured reserve after the 23-man roster is submitted.
Boys soccer
Austin Arnold scored four goals and assisted on two others as Chartiers-Houston moved above the .500 mark in Section 4-A with a 9-4 victory at Monessen on Tuesday.
Jake Cimino scored three goals for the Bucs (4-3-2, 7-5-2). Dominic Hancq had a solid all-around game with one goal and four assists and Matt Bucha tallied one goal and two assists.
Cam Frolo had a hat trick of three goals for Monessen (1-9, 2-12) and Chas Mrlack had the other tally.
- Belle Vernon scored four first-half goals and defeated Laurel Highlands, 5-3, in 3-AAA.
Daniel Sassak scored three goals, including two in the pivotal first half, to lead the Leopards, who continue to hold sole possession of first place in the section at 9-1 (12-1 overall).
Nikeo Apodiakos and Tyler Kovatch also scored for Belle Vernon.
Shashak Gurung scored seven goals, powering Section 4-A leader Brentwood in a 9-1 victory over California. Derek Keys scored the goal for California (0-9, 2-11).
- Southmoreland slipped past host Wayneshurg 3-2 in Section 3-AA.
Gavin Benson and Tyler Switalski scored the goals for Waynesburg, which is 6-4 in section and 7-6 overall. Southmoreland is 5-4, 5-8.
- Peters Township and host Bethel Park played to a 2-2 tie in Section 2-AAAA. No game details were available by press time.
Bethel Park is 2-7-1 in section and 3-7-2 overall. PT is 14-2 in the section and 2-6-3 overall.
Women’s soccer
A second half goal helped visiting Oberlin break a halftime tie and beat Washington & Jefferson 2-1 Tuesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
Sophomore forward Katie Hahn scored W&J’s lone goal, in the 22nd minute. The goal, which was set up by an excellent cross from Lexey Finney, tied the score at 1-1.
Girls field hockey
Nica Schrat scored two goals, Cassidy King added two tallies and that was more than enough for Peters Township to defeat Hempfield, 6-1, Tuesday night. Katherine Kovac had the other goal for PT.
$724 for beer?
According to police, a fan ordered two beers from 33-year-old Nathaniel Collier during the Dolphins game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Collier used his own device to charge $724. The bank notified the victim about the charge.
An arrest affidavit says Collier faces charges of grand theft and possession of a skimming device. He was fired Sunday by the company that employees vendors at Hard Rock Stadium.
