Burke wins Kaltenbach Trophy
Trainer Ron Burke, from the Burke Racing Stable, Fredericktowm, has been named the 2020 recipient of the Jerry Kaltenbach Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the trainer who has earned the most money competing in Ohio Sires Stakes events in a single season.
Burke captured his third Kaltenbach training title in 2020, sending 95 horses to post in the 2020 Ohio Sires Stakes legs, championships, and consolations.
His total money earnings from these OSS events were $1,392,500, surpassing his 2019 totals of $1,121,500 in OSS earnings.
Burke won the 2014 Kaltenbach crown with $428,750 in OSS earnings and was runner-up in 2018, before winning the 2019 title.
This year, his impressive assortment of 2- and 3-year-old pacers and trotters scored 20 wins, 19 seconds and six third place finishes in OSS competition.
In boxing
Floyd Mayweather, who captured 11 world titles in five weight divisions and retired unbeaten, former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, and Laila Ali have been elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum.
The Class of 2021 announced Tuesday also includes former Olympic champion Andre Ward, Ann Wolfe, Marian Trimiar, and Dr. Margaret Goodman. Elected posthumously were: lightweight champion Davey Moore, Jackie Tonawanda, cut man Freddie Brown, manager-trainer Jackie McCoy, journalist George Kimball, and television executive Jay Larkin.
Induction day is scheduled for June 13 and also will include last year’s class, which was postponed by the novel coronavirus pandemic. The Class of 2020 includeS: Bernard Hopkins, Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley, Christy Martin, Lucia Rijker, Barbara Buttrick, Frank Erne, Paddy Ryan, Lou DiBella, Kathy Duva, Dan Goossen, Bernard Fernandez and Thomas Hauser.
In college football
An ongoing COVID-19 outbreak at Michigan has forced the Wolverines to cancel their football game at No. 18 Iowa on Saturday.
This will be Michigan’s third straight game canceled. The Wolverines didn’t play Dec. 5 at home against Maryland or last week at No. 3 Ohio State.
n The first bowl game scheduled to played this season has been canceled.
The Frisco Bowl scheduled for Saturday was called off because SMU is having COVID-19 issues. The Mustangs were scheduled to play Texas-San Antonio in Frisco, Texas. UTSA will instead play in the First Responder Bowl Dec. 26 against an opponent to be determined.
n The Indiana-Purdue rivalry game has been canceled again. Both schools had to pull out of last week’s regularly scheduled battle for the Old Oaken Bucket because of COVID-19 issues.
