Pirates fall to Orioles

The Pittsburgh Pirates remained winless this spring training as the Baltimore Orioles had 19 hits in a 13-0 victory Thursday afternoon.

The Orioles roughed up closer Keone Kela, who threw a wild pitch and allowed three extra-base hits, including a two-run homer from Pat Valaika.

Colin Moran went 2-for-3 with a double for the Pirates, who fall to 0-6.

Dinzeo to compete in Olympic Trials

Former California University cross country runner Aaron Dinzeo will compete in the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the Marathon Saturday at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta, Ga.

Dinzeo, qualified for the Olympic Trials after reaching the ‘B Standard’ in the marathon in December at the California International Marathon in Sacramento.

A seven-time NCAA All-American in cross country and track & field while competing for the Vulcans from 2010-15, he finished as the runner-up at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country National Championships and became the university’s first College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American of the Year during his senior year.

Dinzeo still holds the all-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record in the 10K, which he set while competing at the Stanford Invitational in 2014.

In the NHL

William Nylander scored the go-ahead goal midway in the third period to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs over the Florida Panthers 5-3 on Thursday night.

Auston Matthews, Kasperi Kapanen, Mark Hyman and Justin Holl also scored for Toronto. Frederik Andersen stopped 24 shots in his sixth straight start.

Mike Hoffman, Noel Acciari and Mark Pysyk scored for the Panthers, while Sergei Bobrovsky made 24 saves.

With the score tied at 3, Nylander put the Maple Leafs ahead when he grabbed a loose puck in front and put it past Bobrovsky with 11 minutes left in the third.

In the NBA

The NBA fined the Minnesota Timberwolves $25,000 on Thursday for violating the player resting policy with point guard D’Angelo Russell.

Russell was held out Sunday at Denver for a planned rest. Though Russell did not play for Minnesota on Feb. 8 because of a quadriceps injury, two days after he was acquired in a trade, the NBA deemed Russell a healthy player under the policy that was designed in part to minimize star player absences from nationally televised games.

  • Tobias Harris scored 34 points to lead the short-handed Philadelphia 76ers to a 115-106 victory over the New York Knicks.

The 76ers played without injured All-Stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

Already missing Simmons because of a back injury, Embiid sat after spraining his left shoulder in Wednesday night’s loss at Cleveland when he collided with Ante Zizic. X-rays following the game didn’t show a fracture. He was re-evaluated before Thursday’s game, and the 76ers said they would have an update Friday.

Shake Milton scored 19 points and Al Horford added 15 for the 76ers, who improved to their NBA-best home record to 28-2.
