Jarry, Letang named to All-Star Game

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry and defenseman Kris Letang have been named to the NHL All-Star Game, representing the Metropolitan Division.

Jarry will serve as the replacement for Columbus goaltender Joonas Korpisalo and Letang will replace Penguins forward Jake Guentzel.

This is Jarry’s first career All-Star Game selection. The 24-year old leads the league in all major goaltending categories with a 1.99 goals-against average, .935 save percentage and three shutouts (tied).

Letang, 32, will be playing in his sixth All-Star Game, surpassing Hall of Famer Paul Coffey for the most appearances by a Pittsburgh defenseman.

In wrestling

West Greene won three of the five bouts wrestled and rode forfeits to a 54-24 victory over Jefferson-Morgan in Class 2A Section 1B.

Chase Rutan (132) began the match with a fall for the Pioneers. West Greene heavyweight Brock Bedilion and Danny Collins (106) also pinned their opponents as six wrestlers for the Pioneers won by forfeit.

Dalton Heath (152) and Jonathan Wolfe (220) had pins for Jefferson-Morgan.

Merriman wins 12,000th

Aaron Merriman isn’t really on a Milestone-A-Day Tour – it just seems that way.

On Dec. 30 at Northfield Park, he became the first driver in harness racing history with three consecutive 1,000-win seasons. That same day, he wrapped up his fifth straight North American driving title.

On Tuesday at The Meadows, he notched career win 12,000 when he piloted Shady Grey to victory in the ninth race.

His 12,000th win was particularly meaningful because his dad, longtime trainer/driver Lanny Merriman, joined him in the winners’ circle.

“Dad came to my house to wake me this morning to make sure I was up, but I didn’t know he came to the races. I saw him from afar. Let me tell you something – he enjoys it more than I do. He’s proud of his kids and grandkids, and it’s great to have that support.”

MLB to investigate Boston for stealing

Major League Baseball says it will investigate allegations the Boston Red Sox illegally used their video replay room to steal signs between opposing pitchers and catchers during their 2018 World Series championship season.

The claims were made Tuesday in a report by The Athletic. The website cited three anonymous sources it said were with the Red Sox during the 2018 season who said some players visited the replay room during games to get information on sign sequences.

Those sources told The Athletic that the Red Sox weren’t able to do it during the postseason because of in-person monitors used by MLB in those games.

The Red Sox said they will cooperate as MLB looks into the allegations.

In the NHL

The Nashville Predators have hired former New Jersey Devils coach John Hynes as the third coach in franchise history after firing Peter Laviolette.

The Predators announced the hiring Tuesday before a morning skate.

Taylor Hall scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and the Arizona Coyotes won their fourth straight game, 5-2 over the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night.

Carter Verhaeghe had his first career hat trick and Tampa Bay scored three times in less than a minute to finish a six-goal second period that propelled the Lightning to their season-best eighth straight win, a 9-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Anders Lee scored with 51 seconds left in overtime and the New York Islanders beat the New Jersey Devils, 4-3.
