Conway on boxing’s big stage

Brownson House boxer Matt Conway is scheduled to be on the undercard of one of the biggest boxing matches of 2020.

Prior to the long-awaited rematch of heavyweights Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder, Conway will fight against Gabriel Flores Jr. at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Feb. 22.

Conway (17-1, 7 KO) will take on Flores (16-0, 8 KO) in an eight-round junior lightweight bout, which will likely be part of the preliminary show airing on television. It is not a part of the pay-per-view undercard.

The 24-year-old Conway was raised in Brookline, a suburb of Pittsburgh, a graduate of Baldwin High School in 2013 and trained at various gyms, including Carrick and South Park, before his parents moved to Washington.

Pirates sign OF

Outfielder Guillermo Heredia agreed Thursday to a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Heredia, who turns 29 on Jan. 31, hit .225 with five homers and 20 RBIs in 231 plate appearances last season for the Tampa Bay Rays, who declined to offer him a contract by the Dec. 2 deadline and allowed him to become a free agent. He was acquired by the Rays from Seattle after the 2018 season.

Heredia has a .240 average with 17 homers and 75 RBIs in four major league seasons with the Mariners and Rays.

To clear a roster spot, Pittsburgh designated infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment.

Cervelli, Marlins finalize deal

Catcher Francisco Cervelli finalized a $2 million, one-year contract with the Miami Marlins on Thursday to provide depth behind Jorge Alfaro.

Cervelli played in 48 games last year for the Pirates and Braves. He is a career .269 hitter in 12 seasons.

UConn women upset at home

Teá Cooper scored 27 points and No. 6 Baylor used a dominant fourth quarter to beat top-ranked UConn 74-58 on Thursday night, ending the Huskies’ 98-game home winning streak.

UConn fell one victory short of tying its own NCAA record of 99 in a row at home. The Huskies previous loss at home came in the Big East final against Notre Dame on March 12, 2013.

Baylor (12-1) led by three going into the fourth quarter. The Huskies cut the deficit to one with 6:36 left, then the defending national champions took over.
