July 25

1958 – The Pittsburgh Steelers open training camp at California State Teachers College.

1978 – Tom Cunningham pitches a four-hitter and Charleroi turns four double plays to defeat Peters Township and win the American Legion 25th District baseball championship.

1995 – The PIAA Board of Control approves the use of of the National Federation of High School Associations’ 10-yard overtime procedure to resolve ties in regular-season football games.

1998 – Daryl Ward of Pittsburgh hits one of the most unusual inside-the-park home runs in major league history during the Pirates’ 4-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Three River Stadium. Ward hits a sixth-inning grounder up the middle that deflects off the glove of second baseman Tony Graffanino and rolls into left centerfield, where it gets past center fielder Andruw Jones and rolls all the way to the wall.

1999 – Lance Armstrong wins the Tour de France just three years after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer that spread to his brain and lungs. Armstrong becomes the second American to win cycling’s showcase race.

1952 – Bob Mathias wins his second Olympic decathlon in Helsinki.

1956 – Roberto Clemente becomes the only major leaguer to hit a walk-off inside-the-park grand slam as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 9-8 at Forbes Field.

1974 – Dock Ellis pitches 8 2/3 shutout innings, and Willie Stargell triples and drives in a run, as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Montreal Expos 3-0 at Jarry Park. The game time is only one hour and 47 minutes.

1986 – The Pittsburgh Steelers trim their roster by releasing two players, including former Waynesburg College nose tackle Pete Long.
