1984 – The Summer Olympics open in Los Angeles with a record 140 nations competing. The Soviet Union and 13 Communist allies, including Cuba and East Germany, boycott the games.

1999 – Rices Landing’s Cary Kolat wins a gold medal in wrestling at the Pan Am Games in Winnipeg. Kolat decisions Cuba’s Castillo Ortiz, 5-1, to win the 138.75 weight class. Earlier in the day, Kolat advanced to the finals by pinning Canada’s Marty Calder in 2:42.

2001 – Pittsburgh scores seven runs in the bottom of the ninth inning – after having two outs and nobody on base – capped by Brian Giles’ grand slam off Houston closer Billy Wagner to beat the Astros, 9-8, in the opener of the first day-night doubleheader in PNC Park history. Houston’s Vinny Castilla hits three home runs in a losing cause.
