Major league roundup: Turnbull gets 1st win, pitches Tigers over Reds

4 min read

Spencer Turnbull and the Detroit bullpen combined on a three-hitter, Austin Romine and Travis Demeritte each drove in two runs and the Tigers beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-2 Friday night.

Turnbull led the majors in losses last season in going 3-17 as a rookie. The 27-year-old righty pitched five effective innings at Cincinnati last weekend in getting a no-decision in his first start, then fared well in his second time against the Reds.

Turnbull (1-0) allowed two runs and three hits in six innings. He struck out six, walked one and didn’t allow a hit until former Tigers teammate Nick Castellanos doubled leading off the fifth.

Detroit relievers Gregory Soto, Buck Farmer and Bryan Garcia retired nine consecutive batters in the final three innings.

Luis Castillo (0-1) gave up five runs on eight hits in six-plus innings.

N.Y. Yankees 5, Boston 1: His chambers left empty, Aaron Judge still rules right field at Yankee Stadium.

Judge homered for the third straight night, Jordan Montgomery cut up one of the league’s hottest lineups in his 2020 debut and the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 5-1 n their first home game of this coronavirus-shortened season.

Judge took aim at Yankee Stadium’s short right field porch in the third, a half-inning after starting a double play from right. Gio Urshela and Brett Gardner hit their first home runs of the season, Chad Green pitched two perfect innings in relief, and Adam Ottavino and Jonathan Holder closed up shop as New York improved to 5-1.

Michael Chavis homered for Boston and Phillips Valdez impressed over 2 2/3 scoreless innings, but the club couldn’t overcome another poor start by Ryan Weber (0-2).

White Sox call up Madrigal: The Chicago White Sox promoted second baseman Nick Madrigal on Friday, adding one of their top prospects to the roster.

The 23-year-old Madrigal had been training at the team’s auxiliary site in Schaumburg, Illinois. Veteran reliever Kelvin Herrera was designated for assignment.

Madrigal was in the starting lineup for the opener of a three-game series at Kansas City, batting ninth in his big league debut.

“It’s been a long time coming. I’ve imagined this moment for a long time, since I was a little kid,” he said. “It’s a little different with the stadium empty, but it’s still a dream come true. It’s something I’ve worked extremely hard for for a long time.”

Madrigal was selected by Chicago with the fourth overall pick in the 2018 draft after a standout collegiate career at Oregon State.

Jays still searching for home: Toronto general manager Ross Atkins says life has been difficult for the vagabond Blue Jays at the beginning of a baseball season like no other.

The Blue Jays haven’t had a real home game yet, and still don’t have a stadium fit to host them. They played twice as the home team at Nationals Park in Washington this week. They were supposed to do the same in Philadelphia this weekend until those games were postponed after a Phillies coach and clubhouse staffer tested positive for the coronavirus.

“It’s not easy,” Atkins said on a video conference Friday. “If you put yourself in the shoes of someone who’s trying to be the best in the world at something, they have routines that are very important.”

Once upgrades are complete, the Blue Jays will play at Sahlen Field in Buffalo, New York. Workers are racing to install new lighting, improve the field, expand the clubhouses, and build outdoor batting cages, mounds, and workout areas on stadium concourses.

The Blue Jays’ first game in Buffalo is set for Aug. 11 against the Miami Marlins, who have been idled until Sunday because of an outbreak on the team.
