In the NBA
Dejounte Murray scored 21 points and the San Antonio Spurs gave Tim Duncan his first victory as an acting head coach with a 104-103 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday night.
Spurs longtime coach Gregg Popovich missed the game while dealing with “personal business,” according to the team. Popovich is expected to return to the bench for Friday night’s game against the Brooklyn Nets.
Women’s lacrosse
Washington & Jefferson battled with defending MIAA champion Albion and lost 18-13 at Alexandre Stadium on Tuesday night.
The game featured five ties and four lead changes in the first half hour of action. Ultimately, a four-goal Albion run to conclude the first half handed the Britons a lead they would not relinquish.
Sarah Labovitz led the Presidents with five goals, seven draw controls and four ground balls. Alexis Miller had three goals and Sofiya Bobvonikova scored twice.
In college basketball
Jacob Young came off the bench and scored 17 points and Rutgers bolstered its NCAA Tournament hopes with a 78-67 victory over No. 9 Maryland on Tuesday night.
Montez Mathis added 15 points and Gio Baker had 11 as the Scarlet Knights (19-11, 10-9 Big Ten) snapped a three-game losing streak. It was their school record 18th home win (18-1) this season.
- Boston College’s best options to slow down Syracuse forward Elijah Hughes were sitting on the bench in street clothes.
With three of the Eagles’ top six players injured, Hughes had 28 points, and Buddy Boeheim added 21 to help Syracuse beat BC 84-71.
Bourama Sidibe had 12 rebounds for the Orange (10-9 ACC, 17-13), who scored 10 of the last 13 points in the first half to turn a one-point game into a 35-27 lead and never trailed in the second.
- Cole Anthony scored 19 of his 28 points in the second half to help North Carolina beat Wake Forest, 93-83.
Garrison Brooks added 25 points for the Tar Heels (6-13 Atlantic Coast Conference, 13-17), who won their third straight game after a seven-game losing streak.
In the NHL
Brendan Gallagher had a goal and an assist in Montreal’s three-goal first period, and the Canadiens went on to a 6-2 win over the New York Islanders on Tuesday night.
Joel Armia also had a goal and an assist, and Jeff Petry, Charles Hudon, Paul Byron and Jordan Weal also scored for the Canadiens, and Phillip Danault had two assists. Carey Price stopped 20 shots to improve to 14-6-4 against the Islanders.
Brock Nelson and Ryan Pulock scored for the Islanders, who have lost four straight and eight of their last 10 games (2-6-2). Thomas Greiss gave up three goals on 12 shots in the first period for the Islanders. Semyon Varlamov replaced him to start the second and finished with 12 saves.
- Brayden Schenn scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period and Jordan Binnington made 25 saves as the St. Louis Blues won their eighth straight game with a 3-1 victory over the New York Rangers.
Schenn scored for the fifth consecutive game when his wraparound banked off the skate of goalie Alexandar Georgiev at 9:56. Jaden Schwartz and defenseman Colton Parayko had assists on Schenn’s 25th of the season.
Schwartz sealed it with an empty-net goal, his 21st, at 19:54 as the Rangers lost their third straight.
Source:Broncos to acquire Bouye
A person with knowledge of the deal tells the Associated Press that the Denver Broncos have agreed to acquire cornerback A.J. Bouye from the Jacksonville Jaguars for a fourth-round pick in the upcoming draft.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal can’t be processed and the teams cannot comment on it until the NFL’s new league year begins March 18.
The fourth-round pick in the deal is the one the Broncos acquired from the San Francisco 49ers at the trade deadline last season for wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who helped his new team reach the Super Bowl.
Bouye, who is due $13 million each of the next two seasons, has 14 interceptions in seven NFL seasons in Houston and Jacksonville. He made his only Pro Bowl in 2017.
Judge, Stanton like to start on IL
Injured New York Yankees outfielders Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are likely to miss New York’s opener at Baltimore on March 26.
Judge is having more tests to determine the cause of soreness in the right pectoral area near his shoulder. Judge has not hit on the field since spring training started, and the right fielder felt discomfort Friday when he took batting practice for the second straight day in an indoor cage.
“He feels it more now in the pec,” general manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday. “It’s moved down toward the pec. We’re just trying to figure it out and determine what’s bothering him. In the meantime, I can just tell you he is feeling better in the last 48 hours.”
Stanton strained his right calf on Feb. 26 during defensive drills. Cashman thinks Stanton will be back in April.
“For the time frame, obviously, we’ve got to get the healing component done for a Grade 1 strain and then rehab it,” Cashman said. “With arguably, what, 3½ weeks to go before opening day I think we’d rather be safe than sorry. “
