Pirates fall to Blue Jays
In what will result as one of the final baseball games for the foreseeable future, the Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Toronto Blue Jays, 7-5.
The Pirates built a 3-0 lead after two runs in the first inning and a Bryan Reynolds solo home run in the third.
Toronto then scored five runs in the next three innings to take the lead for good.
Reynolds and Frazier each went 2-for-3 for Pittsburgh. Gregory Polanco also had a pair of hits. Starting pitcher Joe Musgrove went 4 1/3 innings, surrendering nine hits, three runs and striking out four.
Wrestling event postponed
The Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic that was scheduled for this Saturday at the University of Pittsburgh’s Fitzgerald Field House has been cancelled this weekend due to the national effects of the coronavirus.
A statement was released Thursday morning from classic co-directors Kraig Nellis and Philip Mary, who thanked the wrestlers, coaches and parents for their patience and understanding.
Nellis and Mary stated that they will do everything in their power to see that the Classic is rescheduled, and asked that fans who purchased tickets give the committee some time while they decide what action will be taken in holding the event.
College softball
The Washington & Jefferson College softball team lost a pair of games in its final day at the PFX Spring Games in Florida.
The Presidents fell to Catholic University of America and Becker College, both by 5-3 scores.
In Game 1, Catholic scored all five of its runs in the third inning for the win. In Game 2, Becker scattered its runs, including one in the fifth and another in the sixth, that proved to be the difference. Peyton Eckenrode went 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored twice in the second game for W&J (4-8).
Packers release Graham
The Green Bay Packers have released tight end Jimmy Graham after the 33-year-old veteran spent two seasons with the franchise.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst announced the move Thursday. Graham had tweeted out a reference to his “next opportunity'” on Wednesday after ESPN reported his release was imminent.
The move creates about $8 million in cap space for the Packers.
Graham caught 38 passes for 447 yards and three touchdowns last season. He had 55 receptions for 636 yards and two scores in 2018.
The five-time Pro Bowl selection previously played with New Orleans (2010-14) and Seattle (2015-17). Graham has 649 catches for 7,883 yards and 74 touchdowns in 153 career games with 111 starts.
