Rohanna to host clinic
With the start of the Symetra and LPGA tours still a few weeks away, Rachel Rohanna returns to the golf course Thursday as instructor when she hosts a clinic at Rohanna’s Golf Course in Waynesburg.
Sponsored by First Federal of Greene County and Rohanna’s Golf Course, the clinic will be an all-day event for all age groups, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Very few open slots remain, so Rohanna asks interested golfers reach out to her via Facebook to inquire about availability.
“Thursday is going to be an all day event with different time slots for age groups. I’ll do a little introductory to golf, hit some shots, and kids will have the opportunity to putt, chip, and hit balls with me. We will have different stations to work on these areas,” explained Rohanna, adding, “I’m really lucky to have First Federal of Greene County and Rohanna’s Golf Course behind this to help promote the game. This will be a great summer for kids to sign up for the Junior Membership at Rohannas and other area courses.”
Texas Tech’s Moretti turning pro in Italy
Texas Tech basketball guard Davide Moretti is skipping his final season to turn pro with Olimpia Milano is his home country of Italy.
The EuroLeague club announced the signing of Moretti, ending a three-year Texas Tech career that included a school record in free-throw accuracy at 90.6% (213 of 235).
Moretti played a strong supporting role in helping the Red Raiders reach the NCAA championship game during the 2018-19 season. Moretti shot 46% from 3-point range and averaged 11.5 points per game.
During a final season cut short by the coronavirus pandemic, Moretti was second on the team in scoring at 13 points per game.
WTT plans for fans at West Virginia events
If World TeamTennis gets its way, Grand Slam champions Sofia Kenin and Sloane Stephens could be among the first tennis players to compete in front of fans after the coronavirus pandemic prompted lockdowns around the globe.
WTT said Tuesday it is planning to allow up to 500 spectators at each of its matches during a three-week season from July 12 to Aug. 2 at a resort in West Virginia.
All tennis events sanctioned by the ATP, WTA and International Tennis Federation are on hold until at least late July because of the COVID-19 outbreak. But WTT is not affiliated with those tours – no ATP or WTA ranking points are available for its matches – and does not need to abide by their decisions.
Because of the pandemic, World TeamTennis is bringing all nine of its teams to one site – The Greenbriar in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. WTT intends to sell tickets for one-fifth of a 2,500-seat outdoor stadium.
Virtual ESPYs set
It’s a way different kind of year, and so The ESPYs will be, too. For the first time, the show will feature three hosts in remote settings and a changed focus. Instead of honoring the past year’s top athletes and moments in sports, the show is celebrating heroism and humanitarian aid.
Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson, soccer star Megan Rapinoe and three-time WNBA champion Sue Bird will preside over the two-hour broadcast airing June 21 on ESPN. All three live in the Seattle area.
