1945 – Bill Salkeld of Pittsburgh hits for the cycle in a 6-5 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates catcher goes 5-for-5 and drives in all five runs. Salkeld’s triple was his only the season and half his career total. Salkeld had no putouts or assists in the game.
1964 – Washington & Jefferson College hires Paul Pawlak Jr. as its head baseball coach and James White as head coach of the wrestling and tennis teams.
1975 – Ed Vohres is hired as head wrestling coach at McGuffey High School, replacing Ron Junko, who switched to Canon-McMillan. Vohres spent the last two seasons as head coach at Mt. Pleasant.
1980 – Famed softball pitcher Eddie Feigner leads “The King & His Court” to a 6-3 victory over the Ten Mile Valley All-Stars at Washington Park’s Pony Field.
1990 – Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Franco Harris and linebacker Jack Lambert are among seven inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
2001 – Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swann is one of seven inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
