1921 – Radio station KDKA and announcer Harold Arlin provide the first broadcast of a major league game as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Phillies, 8-5, in Philadelphia.
1969 – The Pittsburgh Pirates Willie Stargell becomes the first player to hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium. Stargell hits a home run off Los Angeles’ Alan Foster that clears the right-field pavilion and travels an estimated 506 feet.
1985 – Monongahela hits five home runs to beat Mon-Yough, 9-2, in the championship game of the Pony Host Area Tournament at Pony Field. Winning pitcher Jeff Skorvan homers, strikes out eight and retires the final 11 Mon-Yough batters.
1989 – Quarterback Terry Bradshaw and cornerback Mel Blount become the third and fourth members of the great Pittsburgh Steelers teams of the 1970s to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
1999 – Mark McGwire becomes the 16th member of the 500-home run club, hitting two homers – Nos. 500 and 501 – in the St. Louis Cardinals’ loss to the San Diego Padres.
2001 – Former Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski, the hero of the 1960 World Series, is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. After waiting 29 years to be elected, Mazeroski is overcome with emotion and ends his speach after only three minutes.
2004 – Adam Palmer, playing his first game with the Washington Wild Things, pitches the franchise’s second no-hitter during the second game of doubleheader against the Windy City ThunderBolts in Crestwood, Ill.
