1941 – Pittsburgh manager Frankie Frisch is ejected in the second game of a doubleheader in Brooklyn. Frisch was ejected when he walks on the field with an umbrella to protest playing the game under rainy conditions.
1954 – Eddie Kikla strikes out 18 as Monongahela beats San Antonio, 5-3, to advance to the finals of the Pony League World Series.
1976 – Gary Columbus throws the sixth no-hitter in Pony League World Series history as Monongahela defeats Ferndale, Md., 7-0. Columbus strikes out 17 and walks eight.
1976 – The Pittsburgh Penguins hire former Pirates broadcaster Bob Prince as an administrative assistant.
1999 – Rob Cole, who won two WPIAL championships and one state title at Carmichaels, resigns as the Mikes’ girls softball coach. Cole had a 106-16 record in five seasons.
2001 – Winning pitcher Jarrod Wells throws a four-hitter with eight strikeouts as Washington wins its opening game in the Pony League World Series, 5-3, over Los Alamitos, Calif.
2002 – Jared Howton pitches a four-hit shutout and extends his scoreless streak to 25 innings as the Washington Wild Things clinch a Frontier League playoff berth with an 8-0 win over the Richmond Roosters.
