1931 – Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees hits his 600th home run in an 11-7 victory over the St. Louis Browns.
1977 – Pittsburgh second baseman Rennie Stennett breaks his leg during a 5-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants at Three Rivers Stadium. Stennett was challenging teammate Dave Parker for the National League batting title but the injury ends his season.
1978 – R. Patrick Kelly, teacher and junior varsity basketball coach at Redbank Valley High School, is hired as head basketball coach at Canon-McMillan.
1985 – Tim Morgan hits a three-run homer with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Washington an 8-7 victory over Oak Park-River Forest, Ill., in the Pony League World Series. The win advances Washington to the final round against Marietta, Ga. Oak Park broke a 4-4 tie by scoring three runs in the top of the seventh, but Sean Snee’s RBI single in the bottom of the inning set up Morgan’s game-winning home run.
2001 – Washington scores five runs in the first inning and holds on to defeat Chesterfield, Va., 7-5, in the Pony League World Series. The win improves Washington’s record to 2-0.
2011 – The Wild Things hit six home runs in an 11-4 victory at Rockford. Ryan Ditthardt, Chris Sidick, Luis Rivera, Scott Lawson, Este Harris and Doug Thennis all homer.

1917 – Pittsburgh’s Carson Bigbee sets a major league record – since tied – with 11 at-bats in a 22-inning game against Brooklyn. The Pirates’ Elmer Jacobs pitches 16 consecutive scoreless innings of relief before allowing the game-winning run.
1958 – Robert K. Moore of Claysville wins the National small bore rifle championship in Camp Perry, Ohio. Moore scores 6,385 points out of a possible 6,400.
1960 – Jim Martin throws a four-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts, and catcher Michael Washinski hits a two-run homer as Washington defeats New Bedford, Mass., in the Pony League World Series.
1968 – John Unice, former outstanding playmaker and scorer at Washington & Jefferson, is hired as head basketball coach at Washington High School.
1972 – Jamie Pattison pitches a six-hit shutout as Washington wins its opening game in the 21st Pony League World Series, 6-0 over Carolina, P.R. Buck Bakaitis drives in three runs for Washington, which makes its first World Series appearance in 12 years.
1972 – Pittsburgh’s Nelson Briles pitches a one-hit shutout as the Pirates defeat the San Francisco Giants, 1-0, at Candlestick Park. The Giants’ only hit is Ken Harrelson’s line-drive single off the glove of first baseman Willie Stargell in the seventh inning. He’s the Giants’ only baserunner.
1976 – Gary Columbus hits a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a tie and give Monongahela a 3-2 victory over Sylmar, Calif., in the Pony League World Series. The win puts Monongahela in the finals.
1982 – Bryan Howell hits a leadoff home run and Washington goes on to an 11-4 victory over Oak Park-River Forest, Ill., in the Pony League World Series.
1984 – United States Football League owners vote to conduct one final season of spring football in 1985, then shift to the fall in 1986.
1985 – Future major league pitcher Marc Pisciotta takes a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Marietta, Ga., beats Washington, 7-0, to win the Pony League World Series.
1998 – Chinese Taipei defeats Washington 4-0 in the championship game of the Pony League Wold Series before 4,500 at Lew Hays Pony Field.
