1955 – Fred (Reggie) Bolden throws a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Washington defeats Youngstown, Ohio, 4-0, to win the Pony League World Series.
1975 – The Pittsburgh Triangles defeat the San Francisco Golden Gaters to win the Bancroft Cup and the World Team Tennis championship before 6,882 at the Civic Arena.
1976 – North Palomino (Tampa, Fla.) rolls to a 14-0 victory over Monongahela in the championship of the Pony League World Series.
1978 – Dave Eavenson, who guided Jefferson-Morgan to the WPIAL Class B football championship in 1974, resigns as the Rockets’ head coach.
1981 – West Covina, Calif., wins a 16-10 slugfest over the Carlos Pascual All-Stars of Miami, Fla., in the Pony League World Series championship game. West Covina overcame an 8-3 deficit and four home runs by Miami.
1989 – Pittsburgh’s Gary Redus hits for the cycle in the Pirates’ 12-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, spoiling the managerial debut of the Reds’ Tommy Helms. Redus is the first Pittsburgh player to hit for the cycle since Mike Easler in 1980. It is Cincinnati’s first game since former manager Pete Rose was banned for life for betting on baseball.
2001 – The Pittsburgh Steelers play their first game in new Heinz Field, a 20-7 preseason victory over the Detroit Lions.
