1973 – Billy Knight makes 16 of 23 shots and scores 32 points to lead Pitt to an 82-65 victory over Duquesne in the opening round of the Steel Bowl basketball tournament at the Civic Arena.
1976 – Tony Robertson and Bob Huggins combine for 51 points to lead West Virginia to a 97-82 victory over visiting Duquesne in an Eastern Eight basketball game.
1992 – Jeff Petrucci resigns as head football coach at California University to become the school’s associate athletic director of fundraising. In 12 seasons with his alma mater, Petrucci had a 54-66-3 record and coached the Vulcans to one PSAC championship.
1998 – Senior guard Ed Hurley sets a school record by making nine three-point field goals but Washington & Jefferson loses to La Roche 81-73. Hurley finishes with 38 points.
2003 – Peters Township High School quarterback Jim Gallagher, who passed for 2,055 yards and 15 touchdowns, is named the Observer-Reporter Offensive Player of the Year. South Fayette defensive back Marques Parks, who had nine interceptions and scored on seven returns, is named Defensive Player of the Year.
2004 – Dan Davis makes his sixth three-pointer of the game, with only six seconds left, giving Fort Cherry a 61-60 victory over Western Beaver.
2006 – Willie Parker breaks Pittsburgh’s single-game rushing record with 223 yards as the Steelers rough up the Cleveland Browns 27-7. Parker, the first player in Steelers history to have two 200-yard games in a season, betters John “Frenchy” Fuqua’s record of 218 yards against Philadelphia in 1970.
2006 – West Virginia offensive lineman Dan Mozes of Washington wins the Rimington Award, given to college football’s best center.
2010 – Dave Wannstedt resigns under pressure three days after Pitt capped a 7-5 regular season and earned a berth in the Compass Bowl. Wannstedt had a 42-31 record in six seasons.
