Women’s basketball

Kaitlyn Fertig scored 20 points, Maddy Grennes added 13, and Chatham rolled to a 70-44 victory over cold-shooting Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Thursday night.

Waynesburg (0-5, 0-5) was playing its first game in 12 days and the Yellow Jackets’ shooting touch remained on hiatus. Waynesburg shot only 23 percent for the game and just 17 percent in the first half, which ended with Chatham (2-4, 2-4) leading 35-19. Midway through the third quarter, Waynesburg had made only six of 41 shots.

Andrea Orlosky had 14 points and 14 rebounds for Waynesburg. Brooke Fuller added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Avery Robinson tallied 10 points.

In the NHL

Henrik Lundqvist said Thursday he’s months away from making a decision about his hockey-playing future after returning to the ice less than two months since undergoing open-heart surgery.

The 38-year-old goaltender posted videos to social media earlier this week of himself in goaltending gear taking shots in net. That generated plenty of buzz around the NHL.

Wild Things complete trade

Last week’s trade between the Gateway Grizzlies and Wild Things has been completed as infielder Brian Sharp, whom Washington acquired by sending right-handed pitcher Clinton Hollon to the Grizzlies, has signed his contract for 2021.

Sharp was the 26th round pick of the New York Mets in the 2018 MLB Amateur Draft out of the University of Missouri. He played two seasons in the Mets’ organization.

In 2018 with the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League, Sharp hit five home runs and drove in 22 runs in 50. Sharp played for the Columbia Fireflies in 2019 and had 12 doubles, five triples and 11 home runs to go along with 38 RBI.

Now he joins the Wild Things’ roster for manager Tom Vaeth’s first season with the club.

“He’s a plus defender who will solidify our infield defense,” said Vaeth. “At the plate, he provides some much-needed left-handed power with the ability to be a run producer. We’re excited to add him to the Wild Things family.”

For Wild Things president and general manager Tony Buccilli, Sharp allows the club to continue to do what has recently been done at the corner infield spots.

“There are aspects of Brian’s game we believe we can amplify. He fits the extra-base-centric hitter we typically plug into our corner spots,” said Buccilli. “We continue to build a deep, diverse lineup in hopes we can be as dangerous as possible.”

In the NBA

Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Malik Beasley has been suspended for 12 games without pay by the NBA for his recent guilty plea to a felony charge of threats of violence.

Beasley, in his fifth NBA season, is averaging a career-best 20.5 points.

He was sentenced earlier this month to 120 days in jail for the Sept. 26 incident, when he pointed a rifle outside his home in suburban Minneapolis at a family on a house-hunting tour. Police later found weapons and marijuana in the home.

In college basketball

Corey Kispert scored 25 points, Drew Timme had 16 of his 18 points in the second half and No. 1 Gonzaga won its 50th straight at home, beating Santa Clara 89-75 on Thursday night.

Hunter Dickinson gave Luka Garza fits around the basket, and Franz Wagner scored 21 points to lead No. 3 Michigan to a 79-57 victory over No. 9 Iowa.
