CFL team signs Martavis Bryant
Martavis Bryant, the former Steelers and Raiders wide receiver suspended multiple times by the NFL for substance abuse violations, signed with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts.
The ex-Clemson star drew an indefinite suspension in 2018 while with Oakland. He has not played in the league since.
Bryant, while with Pittsburgh, was suspended for the 2016 season for multiple violations of the policy. He also drew a four-game suspension in 2015 for the same reason.
A fourth-round Steelers pick in 2014, the 29-year-old Bryant has 145 catches for 2,183 yards and 17 touchdowns in 44 career NFL games.
“He fits the mold of what we’re looking for, but he can run, too,” Argos coach Ryan Dinwiddie said.
Pirates sign catcher to minor-league deal
The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed catcher Joe Hudson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
The 29-year-old Hudson has appeared in 18 major-league games for St. Louis, Seattle and the Los Angeles Angels.
Hudson is a career .167 hitter with one RBI in 30 career at-bats. He will be in the mix to compete for the backup job behind Jacob Stallings, a Gold Glove finalist in 2020.
In baseball
The New York Yankees made a rare trade with the rival Red Sox, sending struggling reliever Adam Ottavino to Boston on Monday along with minor league right-hander Frank German for a player to be named or cash.
A Brooklyn native, Ottavino signed with the Yankees before the 2019 season and took No. 0, the Yankees’ last available single digit. He had a successful first season that included a 6-5 record and 1.90 ERA as he became a key setup man for closer Aroldis Chapman.
But he slumped to a 5.89 ERA during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
- The Cactus League and Arizona community leaders have asked Major League Baseball to delay the start of spring training due to coronavirus concerns just over three weeks before pitchers and catchers are supposed to report.
The Cactus League made the request in a letter to Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred obtained by the Associated Press. The letter was co-signed by the mayors of Mesa, Scottsdale, Surprise, Glendale, Goodyear and Peoria, as well as representatives from Phoenix and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
In college basketball
Texas men’s basketball coach Shaka Smart announced Monday he has tested positive for COVID-19 and is in isolation.
The No. 5 Longhorns haven’t played in more than a week.
Texas is scheduled to host No. 24 Oklahoma tonight. The school did not immediately announce who would coach in that game.
