1950 – Waynesburg College’s Tony Gizoni beats Arnold Plaza of Purdue 7-6 to win the NCAA 121-pound wrestling championship in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Gizoni, a sophomore from Washington, is named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler.

1959 – Dave Clelland resigns as head wrestling coach at Waynesburg to accept the same position at Greenville High School. Clelland had a 58-8 record in four seasons including a 48-match winning streak over the last three years.

1961 – ABC is the first network to televise the NCAA basketball championship: Cincinnati vs. Ohio State from Louisville.

1972 – Bill Walton scores 24 points to lead UCLA to an 81-76 victory over Florida State and the NCAA basketball title. The Bruins finish with a 30-0 record and increase their winning streak to 45 straight.?

1989 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade shortstop Felix Fermin to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for shortstop Jay Bell.

1995 – Ringgold High School outscores Williamsport, 23-18, in the fourth quarter to win the PIAA Class AAAA boys basketball championship, 71-66, before 7,921 at Hersheypark Arena. Mike Horan and Jamont Kinds each score 27 points for Ringgold. Horan also grabs 16 rebounds.

1995 – Boxer Mike Tyson is released from a prison in Plainfield, Ind., after serving three years for rape.

1999 – The Presidents’ Athletic Conference announces that Westminster College will join the league.

2004 – Seldom-used Dani Mills comes off the bench to score 10 points and grab nine rebounds as California University defeats Merrimack, 89-65, in the NCAA Division II women’s basketball semifinals in St. Joseph, Mo.

2011 – John Tyler of California makes 19 field goals and scores 49 points to power the Red All-Stars to a 164-122 win over the White in the Washington-Greene County All-Star Boys Basketball All-Star Game. In the girls game, Emily Hansen of Canon-McMillan scores 17 points as the Red beats the White, 61-26.
