1944 – Roscoe Ross runs 56 yards for a touchdown on the game’s fifth play, and Deacon Towler returns a fourth-quarter interception 85 yards for a score, as Donora beats Ellwood City 13-0 to win the WPIAL Class AA football championship before 9,000 at Pitt Stadium.
1994 – McGuffey scores two touchdowns in a span of 2:18 late in the second quarter to erase a 13-point deficit, and Robert Wagner runs 31 yards for a score with 6:31 left in the game, as the Highlanders rally to beat Belle Vernon 20-13 in the WPIAL Class AAA football semifinals at Wash High Stadium.
1998 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade left-handed relief pitcher Ricardo Rincon to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for outfielder Brian Giles.
2002 – Jim Garry, the only head football coach Fort Cherry High School has ever had, resigns after 44 seasons with the Rangers. Garry leaves with a career record of 265-153-14 that includes trips to the WPIAL Class A finals in 1997 and 2001.
2006 – Washington & Jefferson builds a 27-0 lead, then holds on for a wild 27-23 victory over host Christopher Newport in the first round of the NCAA Division III football playoffs.
2011 – The undefeated California University women’s soccer team gets goals from Breanna Robinson and Channing Wilmer to defeat Slippery Rock 2-0 in the NCAA Division II tournament in Albany, N.Y.
