1917 – Visiting Notre Dame makes a third-quarter field goal and the Irish defeat Washington & Jefferson, 3-0. It’s the first home loss for W&J in seven years.

1952 – Cumberland Township High School wins the WPIAL Class B football championship by defeating Wilmerding 12-6 before an estimated crowd of 8,000 at Charleroi. The Mikes rush for 257 yards, including a 24-yard game-winning touchdown by Tom Colbert in the third quarter. Jimmy Haught secures the win with an interception and 74-yard return in the game’s final minute.

1978 — Mike Guman’s 3-yard touchdown run on fourth down and with less than six minutes remaining sends Penn State to a 17-10 win over Pitt.

1978 — Gerald Dudley’s free throw with two seconds remaining gives Canon-McMillan a 69-68 victory over visiting Elizabeth Forward. Dudley, who made 14 of 17 free throws, leads the winners with 20 points.

1987 – The Pittsburgh Penguins acquire Paul Coffey, Dave Hunter and Wayne Van Dorp in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Craig Simpson, Dave Hannan, Moe Mantha and Chris Joseph.

1990 – On a fourth-and-10 play, Canevin quarterback Paul Bell, who enters to the game with only 23 pass completions all season, connects with Dan Dohmlo on a 42-yard touchdown pass with 2:11 remaining and Eric Handlow kicks the extra point to give Canevin a 21-20 victory over Washington in the WPIAL Class AA final at Three Rivers Stadium. Terry Vaughn rushes for 122 yards and three touchdowns for Washington.

2001 – J.R. Ward scores on a game-clinching four-yard touchdown run with 1:49 remaining as undefeated Washington wins its sixth WPIAL football championship with a 24-14 victory over Beaver Falls in the Class AA final at Heinz Field.

2001 – Jermaine Moye runs for three touchdowns and Rochester defeats Fort Cherry 27-19 in the WPIAL Class A football championship game.

2001 – Pitt’s Antonio Bryant ties a Big East record with his 25th career touchdown reception to help the Panthers to a 23-17 victory over host West Virginia in the Backyard Brawl.

2004 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade catcher Jason Kendall to the Oakland A’s in exchange for left-handed pitchers Mark Redman and Arthur Rhodes.

2005 – Freshman quarterback Pat White rushes for 220 yards and two touchdowns as No. 12 West Virginia remains unbeaten in the Big East with a 45-13 win over Pitt on a frigid Thanksgiving night at Mountaineer Field.

2007 – Daine Williams rushes for 234 yards and two touchdowns as California University defeats Southern Connecticut State 43-7 at Adamson Stadium for the school’s first victory in the NCAA Division II football playoffs.

2007 – Pat White rushes for 186 yards and accounts for three touchdowns as West Virginia nets 517 rushing yards and defeats Connecticut 66-21 to win the Big East Conference title.
