1909 – The Pittsburgh Pirates win the World Series as rookie Babe Adams registers his third victory by beating the Detroit Tigers 8-0 in the seventh game.
1952 – Jimmy Haught scores on a 69-yard touchdown run and undefeated Cumberland Township High School ends Jefferson’s 19-game winning streak with a 20-0 victory before a standing-room-only crowd in Jefferson.
1953 – Bob Patmon runs for a touchdown and catches a 38-yard scoring pass from Bob Senay as Canonsburg High School wins for the fifth time in six outings, 20-0, at New Brighton.
1958 – West Greene, trailing after three quarters, rallies for 20 fourth-quarter points and defeats host Ellsworth 32-13 to remain undefeated. Jerry Yost passes for four touchdowns as West Greene extends its winning streak to 14 games.
1959 – Albert Gallatin’s football team ends Waynesburg’s 15-game regular-season winning streak by edging the Raiders 12-7.
1970 – Chas Thomas scores on two short touchdown runs as Chartiers-Houston tops host Bentworth, 20-6, in a battle of undefeated teams.
1973 – The Pittsburgh Pirates trade second baseman Dave Cash to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for left-handed pitcher Ken Brett.
1978 – Bill Fleissner, an assistant under Doug Masciola for the past five years, is hired as head basketball coach at Washington High School.
1979 – Dave Parker and Willie Stargell drive in a pair of runs in the seventh inning, and John Candelaria and Kent Tekulve combine on a seven-hit shutout as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Baltimore Orioles 4-0 in Game 6 to even the World Series at 3-3.
1981 – Quarterback Kurt Kesneck scores on a 63-yard run in the second quarter and Chartiers-Houston’s defense makes it stand up as the Bucs blank South Fayette 7-0. C-H remains undefeated and in a tie with Cornell for first place in the West Hills Conference.
1992 – Tracy Rush scores on two short touchdown runs and throws a 26-yard halfback pass to Chad Lechner for another score as Carmichaels stays undefeated in Tri-County South Conference play with a 26-20 win over Monessen.
1999 – Blissful Hall, with driver Ron Pierce, becomes the ninth horse to win pacing’s Triple Crown with a victory in The Messenger held at The Meadows.
2009 – After a game-changing roughing-the-punter penalty against Jeannette, Washington scores 18 points in the final 9:38 for a stunning 24-16 victory at soggy Wash High Stadium. Quarterback Marquis Brown has three short touchdown runs, including a game-winning one-yard sneak with 40 seconds remaining.
2009 – Kyle Colborn kicks a 19-yard field goal as time expires, giving Beth-Center a 3-0 victory over visiting California.

1925 – During the third quarter of the scoreless Carnegie Tech-Washington & Jefferson football game at College Field, a section of the East stands collapses, leaving several spectators injured. The game is not resumed and counted as a tie.
1970 – Pitt, trailing 35-8 at halftime, rallies for four second-half touchdowns, the last a five-yard pass from Dave Havern to Bill Pilconis with 55 seconds remaining, to defeat West Virginia, 36-35, at Pitt Stadium. It’s the biggest comeback in the history of the Backyard Brawl.
1971 – Steve Blass pitches a four-hitter and Roberto Clemente homers as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the host Baltimore Orioles, 2-1, in Game 7 to win the World Series.
1978 – Trinity High School’s Matty Engle sets the WPIAL single-season goals record in the Hillers’ 7-1 soccer victory over Mt. Lebanon. Engle scores four goals to give him 33 on the season and break the record of 29 set in 1975 by North Allegheny’s Dave Smith.
1979 – Willie Stargell hits a two-run homer in the sixth inning and four Pittsburgh pitchers combine on a four-hitter as the Pirates defeat the host Baltimore Orioles, 4-1, in Game 7 of the World Series.
1980 – Dickie Krause throws touchdown passes to John Townsend, on a trick play in the third quarter, and to Joe Durco in the fourth quarter to give Carmichaels a 21-14 victory over German, ending the Uhlans’ 21-game unbeaten streak in the Tri-County South Conference.
1981 – Bryan Thomas runs for 217 yards and Dan Marino passes for 251 as Pitt rolls to a 42-14 win over 10th-ranked Florida State at Pitt Stadium. The win improves Pitt’s record to 5-0.
1986 – Quarterback Mario Bongiorni throws a nine-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ron Brown with 55 seconds remaining to give Burgettstown a 20-13 victory over visiting Charleroi in a Century Conference game. The win keeps Burgettstown undefeated at 8-0.
1988 – Peters Township hires Rick Bell as its boys varsity basketball coach. Bell had been the Indians’ junior varsity coach.
1998 – Ryan Mytrysak throws three touchdown passes in the final 11 minutes, including a game-winner of 39 yards to Jason Bainer with 45 seconds left, as Waynesburg College rallies for a 33-26 win over Grove City, preventing the Wolverines from clinching the Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship.
2005 – Trinity sweeps the Washington County Coaches Cross Country Meet at Mingo Park. The Hillers’ Tyler Lyon runs away from the field to win the boys race in 16:56, and Trinity’s Chelsea Sumney holds off charges by her sister Shauna and Peters Township’s Christine Beazley to win the girls race in 20:28.
2011 – Ringgold freshman Kirsten McMichael wins the girls division of the Washington County Coaches Cross Country Meet. McMichael’s time of 20:07 is 10 seconds off the Ringgold record for the Mingo Park course. Trinity’s Josh Urso wins the boys race for the second consecutive year, edging teammate Don Zimak by 21 seconds.
