Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield also is dealing with a broken bone in his injured left shoulder but believes he can play with it, a person familiar with his health told the Associated Press on Thursday night.
Mayfield hopes the injury improves enough over the next few days that he can face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 31..
Mayfield didn’t play Thursday night against Denver, ending his streak of 53 consecutive starts for the banged-up Browns (3-3), who were also missing running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt with calf injuries.
Carter, Jarry in COVID protocol
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jeff Carter tested positive for COVID-19 and has entered the protocol, and goaltender Tristan Jarry is in the protocol as well. Both players are currently asymptomatic.
“We did a really good job last year – I don’t think we had one case the whole year – and it just seems like this year, we’re not really catching the breaks,” forward Evan Rodrigues said. “You try to be as diligent as possible and you try to keep yourself safe, but sometimes it’s a freak pass by when you’re leaving the rink. You don’t really know.”

Daniel Sprong set up the Capitals’ first goal and scored on a second-period breakaway to lead Washington to a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils Thursday night.
Anthony Mantha, Dmitry Orlov and Evgeny Kuznetsov also scored as the Capitals (3-0-1) handed New Jersey (2-1) its first loss of the season. Alex Ovechkin had his three-game goal streak snapped but he had an assist on Orlov’s goal.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored a third-period goal to help the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens.
