Kyle Brookman ran for two first-quarter scores and McGuffey’s special teams came up with a touchdown as the Highlanders defeated visiting Beth-Center 35-8 in a Class 2A Century Conference game Friday night.

The win keeps alive McGuffey’s hopes for a share of the conference title. The Highlanders (4-1, 5-4) play at Washington (5-0, 8-0) in the regular-season finale.

Brookman gave McGuffey all the points its would need against Beth-Center (1-3, 1-6) when he ran for touchdowns of 18 and 30 yards in the first quarter. The second score came after Beth-Center was stopped on a fourth-down attempt from its own 30.

Quarterback Phillip McCuen had a hand in the next two scores for the Highlanders. McCuen ran seven yards for a TD that gave McGuffey a 21-0 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, McCuen connected with Tristan McAdoo for a 25-yard touchdown that stretched the gap to 28-0.

The Highlanders scored their final TD when Beth-Center was punting from deep in its own territory. A low snap from center led to the ball rolling into the end zone where it was recovered for a touchdown by McGuffey’s Morgan Shriver.

Beth-Center ended McGuffey’s shutout bid when Ethan Varesko hauled in a 25-yard scoring pass from Dominick Revi in the fourth quarter.

Chartiers-Houston 27, Waynesburg 24

Chartiers-Houston dug itself out of a 24-6 hole in the second half to take a 27-24 victory over Waynesburg in a Century Conference game.

Jordan Irson started the rally with a 20-yard scoring run to make it 24-12. Jake Mele then returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown that brought C-H to within 24-19.

Irson then caught a 19-yard TD pass from Terry Fetsko in the fourth quarter to win it.

Waynesburg’s Breydon Woods rushed for 200 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries.

West Greene 56, Jefferson-Morgan 8

Colin Brady rushed for 184 yards on nine carries and went over 2,000 yards for high school career to lead West Greene to a 56-8 rout of Jefferson-Morgan in a Tri-County South Conference game.

Brady scored on runs of 12, 10, 19 and 94 yards for the Pioneers, who are 6-0 in the conference and 7-2 overall. Jefferson-Morgan fell to 1-5 in the conference and 1-8 overall.

West Greene wide receiver Brice Anderson caught a pair of 42-yard touchdown passes and finished with four receptions for 94 yards.

Johnny Gilbert rushed for 80 yards on 15 carries and completed 6 of 12 passes for 38 yards.

Corey Wise opened the scoring for West Greene on a 1-yard scoring run.

Colt Fowler scored for J-M.

Mapletown 50, Bentworth 15

Landan Stevenson scored three touchdowns, A.J. Vanata ran for two scores and Mapletown clinched a playoff berth in Class A with a 50-15 victory over host Bentworth in the Tri-County South Conference.

Stevenson rushed for 216 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries and scored midway through the first quarter when he scooped up a Bentworth fumble and returned it eight yards to the end zone.

Quarterback Max Vanata opened the scoring with a nine-yard TD jaunt. After Stevenson’s fumble return, A.J. Vanata scored on runs of 35 and two yards to give Mapletown (4-2, 6-3) a 28-0 lead.

Bentworth’s first score came on a 51-yard pass play from Seth Adams to Caleb Peternel that made the score 28-7 at halftime. Adams completed 11 of 21 passes for 102 yards.

Mapletown scored only 12 seconds into the second half when Stevenson bolted 50 yards for a touchdown. He added an 11-yard TD before the quarter drew to a close.

Brody Evans caught a 7-yard TD pass from Max Vanata in the fourth quarter and Xavier Bell had a 15-yard TD jaunt for Bentworth (1-5, 2-6).

Carmichaels 63, Avella 22

Trenton Carter ran for three touchdowns, passed for another and Carmichaels rolled to 63-22 victory over Avella in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.

Carter opened the scoring with a TD pass to Michael Stewart and later had scoring runs of 30, 77 and 71 yards.

Cody McCoy had touchdown jaunts of 50 and 21 yards for Carmichaels (5-12, 7-2).

Noah Markle ran for a pair of touchdown for Avella (1-5, 1-8).

Burgettstown 12, Union 8

Caleb Russell ran for two second-half touchdowns and Burgettstown held off Union for a 12-8 victory in a Class A Big Seven Conference game at Hill Memorial Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, Russell scored on a three-yard burst late in the third quarter to give the Blue Devils (2-4, 4-4) a 6-0 lead.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Russell added a two-yard TD plunge that made it 12-0.

Union (1-5, 3-6) scored with less than two minutes remaining, when quarterback Brylon Thomas broke free for a 46-yard touchdown scamper. Thomas passed for the two-point conversion to make it a four-point game.

USC 31, South Fayette 28, OT

Bennett Henderson hit a 31-yard field goal in overtime to give Upper St. Clair a 31-28 victory over South Fayette in an Allegheny Six Conference game.

USC scored on a 20-yard pass from Mateo CePullo to Aidan Blesselman as time expired in regulation. Blesselman caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from CePullo early in the fourth quarter to cut South Fayette’s lead to 28-21.

Albert Gallatin 50, Charleroi 16

Albert Gallatin scored the game’s first 43 points and cruised to a 50-16 win over Charleroi in a non-conference game.

Albert Gallatin (5-3) led 21-0 after one quarter and 43-0 at halftime.

Caleb Matzus-Chapman and Caleb DeHaven each had two touchdown runs for the Colonials. James Marvin returned a blocked punt for a first-quarter score.

Charleroi scored on an eight-yard TD pass from Brendan Harps to Terrance Woods in the third quarter, and a safety and 10-yard run by Connor Luckock in the fourth quarter. Harps completed 13 of 25 passes for 140 yards.

Fort Cherry-Cornell canceled

The Class A Big Seven Conference football game between Fort Cherry at Cornell was canceled because of COVID-19 issues. The game will be recorded as a forfeit win for Cornell that clinches the conference title for the Raiders.

In other games

California was a 23-0 winner at Monessen in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.
